Hello all,

I was just doing some cleaning up after dinner and decided that the floor needed swifered... In doing so, I realize that there is no more cleaning solution in the bottle. DH gets a grand idea....he took a pair of plyers, opened up the bottle, we made our own solution and presto...I got to swifer the floor.

Now, I realize we will only be able to use each bottle a couple of times due to leakage issues but it beats spending money on the solution everytime!!

My next step is to work on sewing a reusable pad so we don't have to keep buying the refills. Any suggestions???

My Mom read that you can take a larger syringe (my sister used to work in a vet's office and scored us a few of these) and make up your own solution and put it in the bottle once you've punctured it. I think that way you can reuse it multiple times w/o the bottle getting ruined. I've yet to try it (haven't gotten my hand on that syringe yet) but I can't wait to. I LOVE my wet jet and use it a lot!

As far as the pads go, I've read a few different places that you can make your own reusable pads by felting a sweater (washing it in hot and drying it on the hottest setting to felt/shrink the fabric into a very dense material) and then cut it up into squares and stick them on the bottom. This I've not tried either, my only concern is that they wouldn't asorb as much liquid as the actual pads. But if they do a fair job, then it would be worth it because those pads are expensive and we go through them pretty quickly!

I've used the same bottle for over a year. The leakage thing isn't really an issue because I take the bottle out and set it upright when not in use. I've seen pads on ebay but never purchased them

I have a friend that found a way to reuse the bottles with her own solution... now I'm going to have to ask her to tell me how she did it again.

In my old house we layed new tile (dark green) down on the kitchen floor. I was very dilligent in keeping it clean and used a swiffer. Within a year an impossible to remove film appeared on the tile. It dulled it and made it look like I washed my floor with milk.

I added up all the money I was spending on all of my swiffer "needs" and went out and bought a Hoover Floor Vac. I got the Upgraded version (with the scrubbers, I can't imagine the one without them would work very well) for $99 at Kohls.
It takes me 20 minutes to vacuum AND Scrub my Kitchen AND dining room floors. I pay about $4 per month for the solution (It costs about $8 for a whole bottle, but it lasts for at least 8 weeks-I do my floors almost every day)
I've had it for almost 3 years, so I think that was a much better frugal move. I do still use the swiffer for super quick cleanups, but a I've had the same box of cloths for over a year.

I dont use the swiffer, just does not do the job for me... I have to vacuum our floors everyday.. And mop our kitchen just about everyday to.. OCD I think LOL..

But I sold my swiffer at a yard sale last weekend with all the stuff with it. for like 10 dollars... I was not wanting the chemical in the solution around my kid..

I use the microfiber wet mop from Fuller and put Method floor cleaner in a spray bottle. I wear an apron and put the spray bottle in my pocket while I'm mopping.

I have been debating for a couple of month's if I should get the swiffer for my floors but all your comments do not convince me that it's worth it. Thanks.

As for the ceramic a specialist once told me that the best for those was just hot water and vinegar so that's what I use and it works great. Maybe if you use vinegar, after a couple of washes your white film over your ceramic would come off. Vinegar has great qualities.

What is the ratio of vinegar to water? Thanks I may use that instead of buying Method floor cleaner.
