I am amazed- I see litter everywhere. Even in my own neighborhood, there is a boardwalk through a beautiful swamp, and yet there are always pop cans, tennis balls, drink cups, etc. floating around that people throw in.
I can't imagine finishing my drink and tossing the cup on the ground or into a pond or lake. I have taught my kids not to litter. I guess lots of people feel no shame throwing their trash around- or maybe they were never taught better?
One of the very first things I can remember in my life is that old TV commercial that shows the Indian chief crying over litter (yes, I am old). Maybe that commercial needs to be revived. I am tired of looking at other people's trash!

OMG I have been asking people for the past 25 yrs if they remember that commercial everytime the topic of litter comes up... no one has!!! I was beginning to think I was the only person who ever saw it. I was not even in school yet when i saw it so maybe 3 or 4 yrs old. He was in a canoe then he came ashore started walking up a hill in the woods and there was litter all over. The closeup was on one side of his face, you saw a single tear coming down then it panned out. My parents never taught me much growing up, that commercial made an impression on me - I was always careful about throwing things away after seeing that.
I always taught my kids not to litter - and they seem to have listened.
The area we live in is fairly clean. There are litter crews out every weekend with the Adopt-A-Highway program we have. The prisoners and community service sentencees are made to clean up parks and and other places. I have seen when we travel there are so many other communities and cities that are beseiged with trash... it's really sad.

It's really terrible. I just don't understand why people can't just take their garbage home with them or wait till they get to where there is a trash can. I am constantly picking up trash in parking lots, parks, in front of our house, etc. Then, I look around and see 20 more things that need to be picked up. I could be there all day...The worst is when they throw it on the ground 1 foot away from a public trashcan. Geez!
I have talks with dd pretty often about why it is yucky to throw your garbage on the ground. I think a lot of it has to do with how you were raised.

I have also taught my kids not to liter, we have bringing extra bags with us picking up trash on the way to school. I think most of it blows from the main drag where there ARE trash cans. It is sickening.
BTW I too remember those commercials I know I was little but I swear every now and then when I do see liter I see that Indian....I think they should put him out there again even if it is Nick at Night!

Littering makes me mad. It's not appealing to see litter on the ground, especially if there's quite a bit of it scattered around.

Hey I remember the Indian commercial and I refuse to allow myself to be old! That always stuck with me, and so did a Sesame Street I saw when I was really little about how throwing out the plastic rings that hold together 6 packs kill ducks, because they get their heads caught in them. Don't know if that really happens, but I've cut up EVERY single six pack holder I've ever gotten!
I hate litter, too. It really makes me mad that people that smoke think it's ok for them to litter and throw their cig butt out the car window or on the ground... I have a friend who was actually pulled over and given a ticket for this! Can't say I felt sorry for him. We've got super bad fire danger warnings all the time and cigs cause a lot of the huge fires that eat up acres of trees and people's homes. Not to mention, when my toddler stops and picks up a cig butt on the ground, it really grosses me out!
One thing I do have to say, is that around where I live, the wind causes a lot of the litter. On trash day, which is at least 2 days a week because each house has to hire a private trash company, if the wind is bad, it blows over trash cans and the recycle bins, so you have trash all over. I usually run around trying to pick up as much as I can before the trucks get there, but it's not usually mine and there is no way I can do it all myself!

It amazes me how lazy people can be. I will often see litter on the ground just a few yards away from a trash can. What's funny is that some of these people would completely freak out if you tossed trash into their yard or if their kids left trash laying around the house.
When I was little we were always warned not to litter. My parents and grandparents always said they would get a fine for it!
I never saw the Indian commercial but I remember on Wayne's World 2 at the end of the movie the Indian was looking at the mess left after the concert and had the single tear! They should definitely revive the commercial or make new ones for kids to see - it's probably too late for their parents.

Yep...I live right smack dab in the middle of the culdesac, so my yard gets the trash blown into it. We're usually out there picking up the litter from that as well before the trash man comes.
Some people are simply too lazy to throw their empty soda bottles, etc in the trash when they're done. I don't get it, because it's never even occurred to me to just dump off my soda or coffee cup onto the street when I'm done. I'll tell you what really irks me though are the beer bottles that are found smashed onto any given road on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Not only is that ugly, but it's definitely not good for the tires or doggy's feet!

Yeah, not to mention that it's scary knowing that there are so many people out there drinking and driving.

Luckily, our neighborhood is very good about litter...I can't say the same about the rest of the city
I was raised not to litter (it's just common sense to me), throw your trash where it belongs, and I teach my kids the same. We back up to a main road and while it is usually pretty clean, we do get the occasional newspapers or McDonald's cups (angry beyond belief) and we go clean it up. The kids and I take part in DD schools clean up day (we go and clean up the road the school is on.
Hopefully the kids will take pride in a cleaner environment and continue to do their parts.
As a side note...I remember the Indian commercial and I'm not that old (well, in my mind )
