I believe it's pretty hard to get the "certified organic" label on foods due to the strict government regulations-- which came about because so many companies were claiming to be organic and charging more when they were not truly hormone/chemical free.

Your plan sounds very similar to mine. I grown my own vegetables as well and buy eggs locally from known sources, and I also cook from scratch almost daily in lieu of using pre-packaged foods. It seems that the only difference is that I supplement my produce, and buy dairy and meats organic.

I think it is very easy, as a few posters stated, to get caught up in the media hype and hysteria that was previously mentioned. Unfortunately, it does exist and preys on fears that we all have. I am not one of those people who are scared to eat anything because of what might be in it. I will also probably never buy all organic. I do, however, feel that I have researched and used common sense and replaced some of the more chemical laden foods with more natural ones and I feel good about that.

I think there is a happy medium.

I give up other things so that I can afford to buy organics. I "bought into" it idea even before it was popular. If people took the time to read what are in some of the chemicals that is sprayed directly on our food or about some of the additives put in them, or what exactly growth hormones due, and what the purpose of genetically altering our foods is all about, they would not want to hand that food item to their sweet little child. It's easy to close our eyes and just go along, but sometimes it's worth the extra time to dig for the truth. As with any industry, profit is what is thought of first. It's up to us to see that our families are getting pure, nutritious food.JMO

I have to add that I think the "organic" label will be watered down in the future. When anything becomes big business, it's big business that wins. China is starting to get into the "organic" market. Tell me how they can do this when they have no way of regulating what they send now. I'll bet you anything though, if the deal is signed for them to start buying our beef, they will be allowed to send "organics."

I'll be happy when my greenhouse is up and I can grow everything from my own organic seeds. I don't trust the food industry or the FDA with my kid's health.

It does make you wonder about the health benefits. Years and years ago our ancestors did not use pesticides or chemicals...nor did they inject our chickens, pigs, cows, etc...with hormones that they are now contributing to all the cancers and wierd diseases people seem to have in excess now adays.. Back then they died of a good old cold or flu because medical science was not on their side. But also, they ate 10 times better...fruit, veggies, whole grains...not as much meat because they did not have it. We all need to explore this more and not just think it is "hype". Scientists are finding that what our foods are injected with to "stay fresher longer", and all the chemicals and hormones put into the meat we eat is contributing to the increase of sickness, diseases, and cancers.

I don't buy them, and I probably never will because we don't eat a lot of pre-packaged foods and I make a good bit of our other foods from scratch. Right now I am buying organic perishables, which brings me to my next point.
Maybe we do agree. When I typed that post, I was thinking mainly of the pre-packaged stuff - and most of my comments are geared towards them. I don't disagree that the organic fruits, meats, etc. are better for you. I still am not willing to pay the outrageous prices for them, though.
