Default Do you think the whole "organic" movement is bunk?

I was shocked the other day when a good friend of mine casually told me that she "hasn't bought into the whole organic idea". In her mind it is all hype with little proof for being worth the extra time or money.

Of course, I am the opposite. I believe it is a great thing. I was surprised to hear someone disclaim it so out of hand.

I'm sure it is a good thing but I cannot afford to buy into it and enjoy too many things I would have to give up to get into it.

I can't see how eating all of the chemicals & pesticides would be good for you. I don't want to take that chance with my health or my family's. Plus, when you buy organic products that are boxed and such, they always have way better ingredients in them than regular brands. For example, compare the ingredients on regular brands vs organic brands. Regular brands will have a list a mile long and the organic equivalent will have just a handful of ingredients and usually tastes at least as good or better. DH always asks, Why do the other brands have to add all that crap, when these taste better and only have 4-5 ingredients? He's starting to buy into the organic thing, but he would say that even before he had converted.

The other benefit is that organic produce usually tastes better and I can always tell a difference in the taste of milk, meats and and eggs.

I do buy organics when possible (meaning when it is available and when I can afford it). I figure overall it is the better route to go, for me personally and for the environment as a whole. I also find the whole organic thing very interesting, for instance co-plantings different plants that grow well together. It seems a lot more thought provoking than just spraying some chemical that might cause me cancer 25 years down the line. It's a challange!

While I dont my much organic for DH and I. I try to buy all organic for 7 m DD. I figure she does not need the chemicals and pesticides. I will also be giving her organic whole milk. I think that girls today are developing very fast(boobs) and I really do think it has something to do with the hormones in the milk . They say the hormones live in the fat so if they have low fat milk not so many hormones. I will do this as long as I can afford to.

I think that I would buy more organic if I could afford. It I do believe that all the chemicals are bad for us. I personally use chemical free products in my home. I can't afford organic food but I did organic food for my girls when they were getting purred food as babies.

I don't know if it is bunk or not, but I am a better safe than sorry type.

I try to buy some things organic and the things that I buy that aren't (like snack foods) I try to buy the brands that have no artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. I love the Back to Nature brand. They have granola, cookies (my boys and dh love their choc & mint creme ones, like oreo's) and boxed mac & cheese. I don't really care for boxed mac & cheese (even Kraft) but I bought some Crazy Bugs, the Back to Nature brand and made it for the boys a few nights ago. I decided to try it since the cheese sauce looked kind of good and wasn't bright orange in color, it was really good. I would definitely eat it the next time I make a box. Although I checked the ingredient list with a box of Kraft I had in the pantry and it was almost identical so I don't know why I liked the taste so much better in this one.

I do like the taste of organic better and can tell a difference. I love the Coleman Natural brand of bacon, it has no preservatives, no added anything, only cured with celery juice so it's very low in sodium. It's $5 something a package at the grocery store I shop at, for I think 12oz pkg but it tastes so good. My dh and I only eat a bacon and eggs breakfast like 2days a week so I figure it's worth it, better than eating it out I guess. I buy Egglands eggs too and they just taste so much better.

My dh thought buying organic was all hype too though until I started buying certain foods and he tasted the difference.
