As most of you know, dh and I have taken part-time jobs at McDonald's. We often come home with grease stains on our highly fashionable dirt-brown shirts. We are getting to the end of our bottle of Shout gel, and I would love to hear about any simple (read: cheap!!) solutions to get rid of grease stains. We do wash our uniforms as soon as we get home, but the grease may have been sitting on the stain for 7-8 hours if the stain occured near the beginning of our shift.

Do you know of any common household products that we could put on the stain before the shirts get laundered, to help get rid of the grease stain?? Thanks in advance, ladies!

I found this tip you could try:
Oil-Based Stains
Oil based stains include margarine, butter, makeup, oil, mayonnaise, deodorant, gasoline, and ring around the collar and cuff stains. The problem with oil stains is that they tend to reappear just when you think you've seen the last of them. Oils grab onto the fibers in your clothing and they don't like to let go. Oil stains also darken over time. To remove oil stains the key is letting a detergent soak into the stained area, and washing in the hottest water safe for the fabric. Double check that the stain has been removed before you place clothing in the dryer, and treat it again if your in doubt.

Fried foods may pose a risk for our health, but cooking and vegetable oil and their greasy residue can pose a pretty big hazard to our clothing. They key to getting out oily and greasy stains is to wash clothing in the hottest water that is safe for the fabric.

Stain Removal Step 1.

Remove as much excess oil as possible with a dull knife or spoon.

Stain Removal Step 2.

Apply 3-5 minutes to allow it to go completely through the fabric.

Stain Removal Step 3.

Use liquid detergent to rub through the stained fabric.

Stain Removal Step 4.

Allow the garment to sit for a few minutes.

Stain Removal Step 5.

Wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric. Check tags to determine what water temperature to use for washing.

I agree! I've been using it for years with great sucess on all kinds of fabrics...and even on stains that have been missed and have gone through the dryer. I put some on the stain, and rub it in. Sometimes I wash right away and sometimes I don't...it hasn't seemed to make a difference in whether the stain comes out or not for me.

Good luck!

Question, ladies: Does it have to be Dawn, specifically? Do other brands work, or is there something different about Dawn?

This seems to be a cheaper solution than Shout gel. I told dh what you had said, and his response was, "I bet Dawn has coupons we could look for."

We always used Dawn too on my ds's when he worked there. And yes the generic didn't work as well.

I've always just used the blue Dawn...so I have no idea if other types of Dawn or other brands work as well (or if at all).

I think it has to be Dawn.

I washed a load of laundry with a lipstick in college and then spot treated everything with dawn. It washed right out.

Newlywed, my dh is a restaurant manager and I deal with the same problem you guys are on a daily basis. Grease, food, and mystery stains are abundant in our laundry basket. I buy the 300 ounce liquid Sun detergent with the spout. It runs me anywhere from $6-$8 depending on where I buy it. I just refill my handy shout spray bottle with this cheap liquid detergent and use it as a pre-treater.

Works great and is SUPER CHEAP!

A good shampoo can get some grease stains out, too. Something that is made for greasy hair. I've used my regular shampoo and have gotten some pretty good stains out, but they hadn't been sitting for a long time. I haven't tried it for set in stains.

We use dish soap ( yeah I buy dawn too) to get out oil stains out of DH's work clothes. He works on engines all day so his clothes are usually pretty bad, it takes out the gas/diesel smell too!
