hoping that the mate will turn up? Just today I bet I threw away 30-40 socks that I had been tossing into a basket, saving them to see if their mates would turn up. I hated throwing them away, but I'm sick of looking at them piled in the laundry basket for months at a time...and for real, what else could I have done with them!?

I need to do this myself! I have a basket of mismatched socks that I just can't seem to let go! I've tossed a few ... but I keep thinking I need to wait until we completely unpack (or some other excuse) just to be on the safe side I continue keeping them! It is a problem and I'd love to see what other people do as well.

Oh, the timing of your post is making me laugh. After literally years, dh cleaned out his sock drawer yesterday and came to me w/a big pile he couldn't find mates to. I told him to hold onto them until I get dd's room ready, as that's the room I've been storing laundry before I get a chance to fold it - it also has toys and other things in it, so it's possible some socks fell down in there.

He still threw out a bunch of old, decaying ones, though..yipee!

I keep mine forever and then I dust with them. I have even put some off DH's larger white ones over my swifter and swifted around the kitchen with them. Works great and then I don't feel so guilty for tossing them. They work great on cleaning all the build up on ceiling fans. LOVE them for that!

I do all the laundry thats dirty every day so if i don't find the mate in a week I toss them. I used to hang on to them until I had over 60. When I was moving they were all thrown out during one of my purging sprees

My washer/dryer must not eat socks because I've never had a missing mate to a sock!

I've been saving them for too long!...the other day I finally put them all in one place...found some matches and threw the rest away. It does feel wasteful; however, it felt cluttered having a pile of unmatched socks!

cjemommy - You are one special person. I can't believe you never lose socks in your house.
I do laundry at my niece's and my DS's. We all have odd socks.
I keep them till I can't stand it any longer and there are to many of them.
