It's funny, I still have the Tupperware lunch box from when I was a kid, but I've lost all of the containers that go inside. I use it for a first aid box, now. And I would never make my DS take it to school, because I covered it with stickers when I was a kid. Flowers just aren't his style! I saw that new container that Tupperware has, but it's just not the same.
btw, my Tupperware lunch box was red.

They are expensive, no doubt about it. You can cut the cost by getting the box itself, and a 'sleeve' to carry it in which I *think* might come with an ice pack, I'm not sure. It is cheaper then the tote with the handles.
The way that I look at it, I'll be packing my lunch until I'm dead. When I go shopping I don't (or 99% of the time) go out to lunch, I won't go into my whole tirade about bad restaurant food but I prefer the stuff I can get at home. I usually pack some sort of cheese, maybe two different types, organic crackers, tomatoes, and fresh fruit. So anyway, the point I'm getting to is that you'll have it forever!
By the way, Linen's and Things and Bed Bath and Beyond have something with the same idea: basically a tupperware type container, with room for a salad or sandwich on the bottom, with a little shelf for an ice pack (included) and then the top has two separate containers with lids and then you put the actual top on the whole thing. It was $10 with my 20% off coupon. I'm lukewarm about it though, I'd much prefer having more smaller individual cubbies for all my little foods, but now my dh likes it because he tends to take larger amounts of fewer items. It is a little clumsy, but definitely serviceable. They have different ones for salads and things too. Depending on what you will use it for it might suit your needs!

On my internet search for cool lunchboxes (because of this thread ) I found this website that has great asian style lunch boxes. Pearl River
Actually they have a bunch of cool things! But the 3 tier melamine boxes are pretty cool.

I've seen these before and they are interesting. For three kids it would be quite an investment.
Do you have the water bottle and does it leak being laid on it's side? I have the hardest time with thermos's or water bottles leaking in the kids lunch.
Also would the laptop container fit in another store bought insilated box?

These look really nice! I can't decide between the stainless steel thermal lunch box or the melamine 3 tier boxes.

Ugh! I just realized I used the word "cool" 3 times in that post!

I'm not sure about the water bottle because I don't want to give him water in a plastic container. We've been using Kleen Kanteens (yes I hate the spelling too) and they are fabulous and are all stainless steel (won't leach chemicals into the water like plastic).
I also tried fitting the laptop lunch into another insulated cooler because I have so many of them. It didn't fit any of mine even though the website said it 'should' it, it didn't and I have quite an array of them! So I had to go back and order the tote to fit it into, not a big deal but I did have to pay the extra S/H.

I haven't gotten these specific ones, but last week, I did find some great containers at Target. They have 3 sections and a plastic knife and fork that are held in place on the lid. They were on sale 50% off- $1.50 each. DS won't eat sandwiches yet, as he is a picky 3-year-old. But he loves homemade lunchables. These containers are perfect for that. Now we can picnic at the park and not have any waste! We love it!

I got these containers too versus the laptop lunch (it's a bit too pricey for me at the moment).

It's fun to look on Flikr... people take pictures of their bento type lunches all put into the individual dishes, they are so creative!
