I had read on here that several of you compost a lot of your scraps and such and was wondering if you have the special compost bins that turn, if you have a spot outdoors, or what you do. I've been really wanting to do that as we recently moved and there's no garden here and I'll be starting one next year and wanted to begin composting to have some to add to my garden when I start it next spring.

Any tips you have on where you do it, how you do it, what you put in it, basically everything you know about composting would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

We have two kinds of composters. One is a big unit that we keep in the back yard under a tree. The other is a smaller unit for vermi-composting that we keep in the basement. We use the larger composter for when there is too much for the worms to eat or for food they don't like .. they aren't particular about potato skins, onions, garlic, or citrus. :-)

Here is a link for those who have never heard of it.

I just use a little corner of the yard and made a pile. I put small branches on the bottom ( for ventilation ) and then added leaves, grass clippings, food scraps, egg shells, etc and just mix it up with a pitchfork about once a week. If it is really dry, I water it. We also have 3 chickens, so I put their "bedding mix" in the pile as well, and it really works! There are lots of sites on the web about composting, but most try to sell you bins, and equipment. etc. when you don't really need it. Just start piling!
