I think I'm joining the San Francisco mayor and give up on the bottled water. It really is a waste for something that I can already get at home. And it is expensive. Not to mention the plastic bottles that I, alone, have tossed over the years. It's coming out more and more that there is no healthy reason to drink bottled water and I have to admit, I never drank for health reasons. I drank the bottled water because it was there, it was cool, and it was easy. I do have a few bottles that we've saved, as well as a couple of Nalgenes and we're just going to switch to those.

Where is everyone else on the bottled water issue?

I only use bottled water when on the road for a vacation or camping or taking the kids to the park if I dont have frozen water bottles on hand (I fill a regular water bottle [not the kind we're speaking of] 1/2 way with water and freeze it, then when ready to go fill the rest with tap water and its nice and cold). I dont use it on a daily basis - I have always thought it to be an incredible waste of money and have never believed it came from where it was advertised. I always thought it came from someones tap somewhere.

Tap water for us. We don't use bottled water at all. Even when we travel, we fill our Nalgene bottles with tap water before we go. Friends of ours serve a small bottle of water to each person at every meal. I can't stop thinking about the money they'd save if they switched to tap, as well as the huge environmental impact. But it's not business so I stay out of it. I am however tempted to ask for tap water when we visit them.

There is a difference between bottled Drinking water and tap, Reverse Osmosis. That is a process of filtration that bottled drinking water goes thru. It will say this on the side of the bottle. The only kind I buy has to say this. Spring water isn' put thru reverse osmosis, so I won't drink it. It doesn't matter if the water comes from the city water supply just as long as it goes thru the reverse osmosis process. I don't understand why this point isn't being discussed.

Last year, my MIL recieved an inheritenace and bought us a side by side refridgerator with water in the door. It is filtered as well. That is all we use. If we need to take water with us, DH has a small cooler with a water spout that he fills from the fridge.

On the front page of our paper this week there was an article about bottled water companies having to come clean- I'll try to link it. One of them is just selling bottle tap water. Aquafina labels to spell out source - tap water - CNN.com

We do use bottled water too. Mostly on trips were we can frieeze in and use it to keep other drinks/snacks cold. I do reuse them a few times. I do know what a huge waste they are. I can at least say we dont buy as much bottled water as we use to. In our house if you want cold water, I usually have a pitcher of water in the fridge.

Big heavy duty bottles - used a lot by hikers. It's almost impossible to break one.

Like bigger than a gallon of milk size? Sounds interesting, i'm always looking for a good sized (but not too huge) water bottle to take with me on the mail route. I have bought bottled water on occasion, but honestly don't like the taste of it, so i emptied it out and refilled it with our tap water (which i do love!).
