Our development doesn't allow clotheslines (which I don't mind) but after being in the country a week I want to start drying some of my clothes outside. I think it would have to be around the garage or on around our patio. It has to be something like a "clothes drying tree" - any suggestions?

I had the same dilema, I bought two drying racks at target and put them discreetly on one side of the porch. It works fine and I can use them indoor too if need be.

My dryer broke so I started hanging everything inside, it has been no problem. I can hang 5 loads at a time. With the nice hot weather and if you have a breeze through your house ,they dry so fast.

Our doesn't either and I have to admit it really bothers me. We get all this information about conserving energy, turning the air conditioners to a higher temperature, unplugging appliances and then then outlaw the humble clothesline ?!?!

I use what looks like an upside down umbrella which really would only be descreet when not is in use. I love having a fenced in private back yard and the best part of where I live there are NO developments. Yes its urban and I love it. I would suggest getting a couple of dryer racks to set out when you can.

Also just so you know the NEW Target is up and running and WOW is it big. Knocks Avons right out of the park. Yes I was in Target heaven yesterday

Oh and one more thing On August 12 there is some sort of festival at Avon Commons might want to mark it on your calender for your ds

Ours doesn't allow clotheslines either but DH just strung several lines of it in the unfinished part of our basement and it's fabulous! I also dry on hangers and hang things in my guest room closet or bathroom. My clothes aren't sopping wet though, after I wash them, I throw them in the dryer for about 10 minutes and then hang them up.

My Parents lived in a Neighborhood with lots of by laws ( Like no Clothes lines) when I Was a Teenager -

I Promised I Would Never Ever own a House and Have someone tell me what I Could Do on My Paid for land

Anyway - My mom was a Wash hanger too - But she Can go with any Flow - so She doesn't worry about much...Like Me.
She Used to Hang wash lines in her Garage - Pull the Cars out - Open the Doors half Way - so noone Could See in And Open a window -

The Stuff Blew and Dried nice on a Warm day!!
She also hung it in the Basement.

I don't Have a washline right now - Due to a Husband who hasen't Had time to Put in the Posts since we've moved here...

I bought a Couple Heavy duty Drying racks and I Can hang towels and Everything on them ,..

My Washer has a Super Spin cycle - so My Wash is Not that wet when it comes out -

I drape it over the Hall Bath Shower Rod - I Hang it on hangers , i throw Bathroom Rugs over the Porch rail to Dry ,
I also Will Drape it over the Back porch furniture if needed -

I hate the Dryer For the Most part - So I Improvise

I had a portable drying rack at our last house. Worked fine. Somehow I will work out drying clothes outside when our home is finished next year.

About restrictions. There are more and more places where people are either telling their neighbors what they can't do through zoning ordinances or self restricting through neighborhood associations. I think people ought to be able to self restrict if appearances are important to you and everyone knows when they buy what they are agreeing to.

Forcing others through zoning ordinances is just wrong, IMO. I have witnessed real horror stories where families were destroyed when they ran afoul of a needless ordinance. And we are not talking about the proverbial hog farm scenario.

I don't dry my clothes outside because:

1) It is so UNhumid here in Idaho that I can dry my clothes inside without any problems. We actually appreciate the added humidity inside the house. I realize that isn't your situation in MD, though.

2) I can't take the allergens sticking to my clothes.

For that reason, I hung an extra shower curtain tension rod in all our bathrooms. They work great for drying things over the bathtub or shower stall, especially wet bathing suits and 'unmentionables'. I'm also rather lucky that our washer extracts that water from our clothes very well so nothing comes out 'drippy'. I just remove it from the washer and hang to dry on a rack right in the laundry room.

But there is something to be said for the disinfecting effect of sunlight so, if you're interested in getting a stand here are a few links ...

Thanks everyone!! I have to look at all the links! We have a 3 car garage so if I just moved my car when dh is out I'd have plenty of room to dry them in the garage.

I have to say, although it makes it a little more challenging for me, I am glad that we can't have clotheslines here. At the risk of sounding snobbish, we have neighbors around us that I can see drying things on their roof if it was convenient. I always thought I'd hate living in a development but I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world!
