I've decided to move this thread to the Green Living forum, because I think it belongs here, instead of the Spending Less/Saving More forum.

I tried this exact thing a few months ago. I used baking soda, then rinsed with vinegar. I made a mistake though....I added a little olive oil to the ends of my hair, thinking it would make it nice and shiny! It was disastrous. I did try just the baking soda/vinegar for a couple more days, but keeping the baking soda dry (in a convenient container) was challenging, and being pregnant, I gave up. I'm currently using Whole Foods brand of shampoo/conditioner -365- in herbal mint and really like it. It's pretty reasonably priced, also.

I tried using the Organic Coconut Oil as a body oil (I, too, have read about all the wonderful health aspects of it) but I began breaking out in small, red, itchy bumps on my legs. I stopped using it, tried again a couple months later, and same thing.

I also get the red, itchy bumps from EV Organic Olive Oil! I really believe in trying to only put things on the skin which we'd put in our mouths, but can't seem to make it work! Grrrr. (I have read others have had this skin reaction as well....)

Good luck to anyone else who tries it!!!!

p.s. We do drizzle coconut oil over our food... like oatmeal etc... because it's so good for you. And I use it to cook.

After browsing this thread, I got motivated and just tried a vinegar rinse on my hair. My hair is thin, fine and short, therefore, product can build up on it easier. I have been using the Burts Bees shampoo/conditioner, which I like fine. However, if I use too much of the conditioner, it looks oily. I have blonde hair so I put 1 T of vinegar and 1 T of lemon juice to 1 cup of cold water. I shampooed as normal, applied this and worked it through. I barely rinsed it and I tell you... my hair was so soft and it seemed to take all of the buildup off of it. I'm almost out of the shampoo, so I'm going to try the Burt's Rosemary mint shampoo bar and incorporate the rinse 3 days week and the conditioner the other 4. We'll see how it works. I love the rinse though! Thanks for the ideas!!:happy dance:

Hmmm, seems like a lot of work but it sounds like it is beneficial. Anything to save some $$$

I thought it was a lot of work when I first started reading about it, but it isn't really any more work than when you simply wash and condition your hair. The first few times definitely took a little more time, but now it's just routine and I still take a shower in about 7 minutes.

I have naturally curly hair, which means it's naturally coarse and dry. I've read many times that curly hair does better without shampoo, and that generations ago, women only shampooed about once a week (usually at a salon where they also had their hair 'set' for the week - my grandma used to do it).

Then, my hairstylist recommended the same thing. But, I exercise often and thought it would be gross not to shampoo afterwards. She suggested using just conditioner, as if it were shampoo, and only using shampoo once a month or so. I tried it and now that's all I do. The frizzies have tamed, and my hair doesn't feel so dry.

I then use an inexpensive styling cream with a few drops of olive oil added, and the results are great! I often get compliments . . . and share my "no shampoo" advice when other frizzy-haired women ask what I do ; )
