I know several people on this board use Paperbackswap.com as a means of recycling their old books and getting new ones. I had never looked into it before, but I did today, and it sounds like a very good system- fairly easy to manage. The only cost involved is postage if someone requests a book you have listed. If you request a book, it's mailed to you free.

You do have to list books in order to request them- that's only fair.

So- give me the word- are you using it? Do you like it?

I belong to paperbackswap. You start by listing books you no longer want. It's usually easy to do by using the ISBN #. Then people request your books, you pay postage to send them (usually $2.13) and that earns you credits. Then you can use the credits to order books which are shipped to you at the shippers expense. So basically you're "trading" books for $2.13 a time. I think you do get one or two credits when you first list books, but it's been so long ago I joined that I can't remember for sure. I've gotten lots of nice books for myself and my children. You can also generate a wishlist and they'll let you know when the book becomes available so you can order it. I have a huge wishlist of books my kids & I want. Just this wk I've shipped out two books and have one on the way to me and have received one. If you do join and list me as your referral I get a free credit:happy dance: Same name there: aliadam. Let me know if you have more questions.

Just wanted to say I do paperbackswap.com too and I love it. It has been fun to get some books through the mail. To get started, you need to post several books to get your credit going - look at yard sales for nice books. I look for mostly thin children's books in very nice condition. They are much cheaper to ship. I'd definitely recommend it!

A question for you all- how long do you hold onto books if no one requests them? I have nine nice children's books that I was about to put in a consignment sale, but now I think I will use then for my "starter" listings. However, I don't want to keep them forever.... they are books that for whatever reason my kids don't enjoy as much as the others we have, and I am still on that decluttering role. So how long.. six months? a year?

I have had some books listed over a year. It somewhat depends on what kind of books you're listing. If they're new books or very popular books, they'll get snatched up right away. If they're older, or I know with some of my kids books, they'll hang around there forever. But usually they'll EVENTUALLY get taken. I had listed a Nora Roberts book about a year ago and there were hundreds of them listed. Well just this wk mine finally got picked (you have to wait your turn in order of when you listed it). So even the books with lots of copies listed may eventually be ordered. I haven't taken any off my offered books yet, but who know, eventually I might. HTH
