Anyone out there gone totally TV-less?

I'm just curious. If you did, was it hard... did you have to do it gradually, over time? Do you miss it?

My kids watch one video per day- 30-45 minutes (Clifford, Little Bear- that type of thing.) But it is really so that I can have a break- I think they wouldn't even miss it after a few days. Recently I read a blurb a mom had written about how she'd calculated the hours her kids spent watching TV and was horrified how much of their time she had wasted. She blamed herself for wasting their time since she controls the watching. She said that she was, really, teaching them to just sit there instead of read, use their imaginations, etc.

I know there are all extremes of TV watching, and every house has their own rules.

But if you've given it up all together, how did that go?

We don't really watch much tv, so we have gone for several weeks at at time, on trips and even sometimes at home, just not realizing it. It's not hard for us because we're just not that interested in the first place...kwim?

I would love to ditch our tv...or atleast cable. But I have to admit that because of cable we have several choices for PBS. The kids watch tv in the morning as I get everyone settled down, dressed, fed ect for school. TV goes off at 9am and then my kids (I have daycare kids during the day) watch tv from around 8-8:30 in the evening. We really don't watch that much tv and what the kids watch is helpful. I have blocked most stations including Nichelodeon...anyway really listened to how some of those cartoon characters talk to each other!!! Maybe I am unrealistic...I know my kids will here words like stupid and dummy soon enough but the attitude that goes with it is just as bad....I would like to keep it out of my house ....atleast as long as I can!!!n my soapbox:

We rarely watch TV. I have brought it up with DH before and he is the one who doesn't want to give it up...because of his Sunday ticket football games.

He is never here anyway to watch anything, but he just won't give up those games.

DD and I could easily give up TV. We watch videos occasionally, but that's about it.

Wow...I'd be really interested to hear from those who have given up TV...personally I can't...I couldn't even survive the no TV for a week challenge my DD did in school last year...I snuck the TV while she was at school (and bribed DS with lollipops not to tell her!) and at night? (I'm pretty sure that's the week I almost went blind b/c I had to sit 12 inches from the screen so I could still here what was going on!).
Nope no giving up TV for me...not in the family room, not in the kids rooms, not in the bedroom (what I am supposed to pay attention to DH at night?!)
I will not do it Sam I am,
I will not leave TV Land,
and you can pry the remote from my cold dead hand

Honestly, I don't think that I could go without tv altogether. I can go without watching tv for periods of time, but could not go without no tv at all. or it would be a great adjustment to say the least..

I was at home yesterday since it was the first day of school and ended up turning the tv off most of the time.. There was just nothing on that ws interesting to me..

I would like to limit the time the kids watch - especially in the winter when is is soooo cold out there aren't many other options.

I only watch what I think of as quality TV - I can't deal with stupid reality-type programs. Instead I like Discovery, Food Network, etc.

We haven't had any TV channels since our daughter was born almost four years ago though we do have DVD's. My daughter probably sees about 2 hours a week, maybe not that much because sometimes we go days without seeing anything. She's sick today so I suspect in a bit we're going to all go downstairs (our TV is in the basement) and let her watch a bit. TV is good for sick days.
