I wasn't that impressed.

Most of the stuff they had organic is the same selection they have at Harris Teeter. The prices were about the same as well and Harris Teeter runs sales. Does anyone know if Trader Joe's has weekly sale ads? They didn't have my Horizon milk (I am convinced that they lace it with crack or heroin...I am completely addicted to the stuff).

They did have a great cheese selection as well as organic produce.

One thing I saw that kind of irked me was that they had family packs of cut up chicken that were priced by the 12 oz. unit...pretty sketchy if you ask me. Who expects the units to be broken up into anything other than a pound?

I think I will just stick to HT...they are closer to my house and they run some fantastic specials on their organics sometimes.

I really like Trader Joe's, they have a great selection of olives, artichoke hearts and cheeses. They sell a delicious wine for $2.99 a bottle and they sell organic animal cookies that come in a big tub for $2.99. Great for the kids for snacking and taking in to preschool.
I don't have a Harris Teeter near me, sounds like they have good deals! Organic can get expensive!

Trader Joes really doesn't run ads. If you sign up for their flyer, they will send it to your house (they stopped mailing them for awhile to save $$, expecting you to pick it up at the store, but they recently reduced its size and are now mailing). I like their flyer because it gives me a jump start on their list. Not everything there is good. I, personally, dislike their produce - it seems always old here in AZ. But I love their seafood and frozen items. I found it is a matter of trying things out. I don't care for much of their yogurt, their milk is OK, but we've had problems with the quality of the chocolate milk. i stay away from their breads - just tasteless and dense. You also have to price compare. BUT, I have to say, I walk away from there with 5 bags of groceries, spending a lot less than when I leave Safeway with 5 bags of groceries!

We hit TJ's about once per week for a list of specific items that we can't get anywhere else. Well, we could probably get them at Whole Foods, but they are more expensive there and it's twice the drive for us.

They do not have a huge organic section - but we do get their organic tomato medley (bite sized), organic strawberries, org bananas, certain org yogurt and cottage cheese, org fruit juices for the kids, org cereals on occasion, org nuts and seeds, and we stock up (and freeze) a certain bread that our family loves. BTW their prices are pretty good on some things - organic sprouted bread for $2.29 a loaf! It's our favorite one (most sprouted breads are AWFUL.) We stock up on the bread (4 per week) and freeze as needed. There are lots of other things we buy there (org peanut butter, almond butter and TONS of rice milk for my 2.5 yo). For many years I couldn't figure out what people bought when they went into TJ's... now that we have our "core" items, we can't live without them! We love TJ's and their employees are great too.

I think that is probably what we will do. The organic apples were cheaper and looked better than tha ones at Harris Teeter. Their organic produce selection in general was better so I will have DH stop on his way home from work every week and just pick up a few "core" items as well.

We don't have a Trader Joe's in Idaho, but we did in the state where we used to live.

You have to understand TJ's purchasing policy, if they can't stock an item and guarantee they will have it cheaper than anywhere else (or at least, as cheap), they won't carry it. Sometimes they will have Horizon milk, sometimes they won't. It depends on the deal they can get with the distributor.

There are some items at TJ's we adore and some we can't stand. For isntance, TJ's has a frozen tiramisu dessert that is outstanding! My brother, who has connections to the catering business, always brings TJ's tiramisu to potlucks and people think it is custom made in a catering kitchen because it tastes so good. When my hubby travels, he is always on the lookout for TJ's thick corn chips. They are yummy. And I do appreciate their organic, vegetarian cheeses (without rennet) because they melt and act like real cheese in cooking. Plus, TJ's special blends of bottle fruit juices are really good, too.

Kellytime,
does your TJ has organic cottage cheese? I can't find it anywhere

Back to OP, I really like TJ, that's the only store I know that will allow you to return open stuff, no questions asked. I think it speaks volumes about how they stand behind their product.

I can never do my full shopping there, since they don't have all the variety of fruits and vegs, but what they do have is good quality and reasonably priced

I've been wanting to try Trader Joe's, but the closest one in 30 minutes away and I don't want to drive that far; but I did hear that they are putting on in my town within the year!

We have 2 fairly close to us, but I always forget about them. I do have to admit that the 2 buck chuck (which is really more) is decent for an everyday wine.
