Today I saw two jars of pasta sauce on sale for 99 cents. One was in a can. One was in a glass jar. Assuming I wouldn't re-use either container (I have an abundance of containers), which is more environmentally friendly to purchase - which recycles better ~ cans or jars?

Glass recycles better but the metal lid with the plastic inside seal isn't recyclable so the can is better environmentally - IF the can doesn't have a plastized inside liner.

Definetely cans. They do recycle glass but it is not worth much. Metal sells for a better price because there are many more uses for it. There is not much they can do with recycled glass.

I would say the cans. I recycle those, I don't recycle glass because I hardly ever have any.

I'm late responding to this, but had to mention....we try to avoid canned products (even if they are organic) and only use jars! The white plastic lining/coating in many of the cans is BAD NEWS, and you can't really tell which cans have that white lining until you buy and open them! So, we use jars. I wish I could remember the name of the white lining in the cans... I've read some articles on it and freaked out (I am pregnant and had just made spaghetti using organic sauce from cans with the white lining!!! UGH...) It's some kind of hormone or endocrine disruptor. If I find the article again, I'll post it.
