Along the plant idea, we went to a party where the mom had bought a couple flats of potted plants (small ones). There were purple flowers in some, some herbs in others and there was a third kind. I thought it was a very refreshing idea! She also included crayons and coloring books (which don't go over well with boys, particularly older ones I should mention!)

I am always stuck on the goodie-bag issue --- I hate goodie-bags but always feel obligated to get them because otherwise the kids are like, "Where are the goodie-bags?" Believe me, one year I didn't hand them out (I felt the party was fun enough for goodness sakes!) but I was sooooo mistaken! The kids were practically in shock when I told them there weren't goodie-bags!
