I thought this was a great monthly referance for ANYONE who loves thier fruits and veggies - Not just "aspiring vegetarians", like me.

That said, an easy way to save on these items is to buy what's in season. (And freeze??) Here's a guide to help you identify the best produce deals month-by-month:

January
oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, tangelos, lemons, papayas, cabbages: red, white and green; leeks, broccoli, and cauliflower.

February
oranges, tanelos, grapefruit, lemons, papayas, broccoli, and cauliflower.

March
pineapples, mangoes, broccoli, and lettuce.

April
pineapples, mangoes, zucchini, rhubarb, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, and lettuce.

May
cherries, pineapples, apricots, okra, zucchini, rhubarb, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, and lettuce.

June
watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, peaches, apricots, corn, and lettuce.

July
watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, blueberries, peaches, apricots, kiwi, raspberries, plums, cucumbers, tomatoes, summer squash, corn, green beans, and lettuce.

August
watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, blueberries, peaches, apricots, kiwi, raspberries, plums, cucumbers, corn, eggplant, tomatoes, summer squash, green beans, and lettuce.

September
grapes, pomegranates, persimmons, eggplants, pumpkins, tomatoes, spinach, and lettuce.

October
cranberries, apples, pomegranates, grapes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, winter squash, broccoli, spinach, and lettuce.

November
cranberries, oranges, tangerines, pears, pomegranates, persimmons, pumpkins, winter squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, and spinach.

December
pears, oranges, tangelos, grape fruit, tangerines, papayas, pomegranates, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, and cauliflower.

Always a Good Deal:
bananas, potatoes, and celery.

BON APPETIT!!

I haven't had to buy veggies all summer. I grew my own and canned and froze lots. But, now that fall is coming, I will be buying some again. The thing I am sure to do is to check where it comes from. I only buy produce that is from our country and preferrably, my own local area.

Wow!! I wish I had a garden that would sustain our family through the whole summer!! Great job!! I need to read up on canning though...

And I agree about buying US grown, or local. I can't WAIT to hit some farmers' markets this Fall!!

We have been trying to eat local as much as possible too. You can go to pickyourown.org and 1/2 way down the page, you can pick your state (or country further down) and find out what is in season in your state at what time.
