I am doing so much researching online, trying to learn as much as I can about off-the-grid houses and living off the grid. I came across this website about a house in Maine that is completely powered by solar, including thermal solar water heating and house heating. It's really, really cool!!

Maine Solar House

I want one.

Even without solar power that is a NICE house! A little too big for my house cleaning abilities but still pretty to look at!

I agree, the house is HUGE! But I love how they use and monitor their energy and solar input.

I like the chart showing how much carbon emissions, etc. that the house has NOT put out!!
The numbers are amazing!!

And for this house to be in MAINE!! That's what surprised me the most. I always pictured Maine being cloudy and foggy. The site mentioned having sunny days though...and they obviously have enough of them to justify building a solar home.

Just goes to show you that a solar home can be built ANYWHERE if one can be built in MAINE!!

We had a friend's house here in North Idaho (trust me we can get real gray in the winter) that was off the grid but they had a generator for times when their solar didn't produce enough power.

They sold that house and their new house had everything replaced to make it environmentally friendly but they didn't have solar that time around. I think they had some problems with the solar but I'm sure technology has improved since then.
