I was just reading the evils of baby wipes ... I LOVE my baby wipes! I even use them, though not near as often, when I don't have a little one in diapers. I could cut them in half.

I'm going to have to think about this -- I didn't do well with cloth diapers either.

From the Green parenting site, Green parenting: 20 small steps that make a big difference - BabyCenter

Rethink the baby wipes
Most baby wipes take several hundred years to break down, says Joanna Yarrow. Considering the number of wipes used in the United States (about 5,000 per baby), that's a lot of landfill. The most earth- and baby-friendly alternative, Yarrow says, is to make your own by cutting cotton fabric into small squares and washing them when dirty. At the very least, when just a quick swipe of a wipe is needed for easy cleanups, rip a wipe in half.

I use cut up flannel receiving blankets. I have them soaking in a Tupperware container with a mix of water, baby soap and oil.

I have read...and I can't remember the exact recipe, sorry...that you can make your own wipes from paper towels. I wonder if those would be better in the land fill than the wipes? Certainly, they wouldn't be as tough as a wipe, but maybe greener.

I don't think I could do the cloth wipes thing. I'm bad though cause I am a SAHM and I didn't even try cloth diapers. I'm ok with it though.

Why exactly can't you do it?

i make my own with paper towels, and i actually like them better than store bought wipes! I use 1/2 roll of bounty paper towels, 1 1/4c water (i boil it first to kill germies, plus it makes it easier to mix), 2 tablespoons of baby wash (johnsons bedtime bath for the lavendar scent), 2 tablespoons of baby oil (johnsons lavendar oil). I put it all into a large rubbermaid container. I recieved all of the ingredients as a shower gift, and i'm still on my 1st bottles and dd is 9mo. once i run out of the johnsons stuff i plan on using natural oils and soaps instead, but i can't say enough good things about them!

More specifics please!

Have you tried out different kinds paper towels? Does it need to be that kind?

What about the container? Is it hard to open it when handling baby's mess?

How long do they stay moist? Have they ever dried out on you? Do they tear a lot?

Thought I might give that a try!

TIA

I use flannel cloth wipes that I made. They really aren't as convenient as pulling a fresh wet wipe out of a box, but it sure has saved my family money over 3 kids so far. I just keep a small squirt bottle of soapy water to wet it with nearby. I've had trouble with mildew if I leave them in a tub of water w/ soap...
Yes, it's the same as washcloths, but I had fun making cute flannel ones just the right size. It also distinguishes them from my regular wash cloths for laundry since I wash diapers differently.

You can get cloth wipes from some of the cloth diaper sites. I just got some from Green Mountain Diapers, but have not tried them yet. They say they can be washed with the diapers.
