We take our live christmas tree and have it chipped so we can use it as mulch in the garden! Our family loves to cut the tree down, it is nice to support the tree farms too!

I just ran across the article on Yahoo this morning asking this very same question. I thought I would post their response.

Oh Christmas tree, oh green Christmas tree? : Yahoo! Green

I would love to do a live tree that you replant but I can't afford it so we have an artificial one.

I do love the smell of the live ones though.

I'm not sure yet...we have fake ones (from when I moved in - mine's better though!), but we may cut one from my family's property. We tree farm there - not Christmas trees, but red pines - the ones that are made into telephone poles and log cabins. There are LOTS of other trees around there, and I have two I'm eyeballing, a scrub tree that will be cut anyways soon, and a nice blue spruce that is growing in the wrong spot.

We did plant 10,000 new red pine seedlings last year, so I think we're good for the whole plant-a-tree thing! We also have a forest management plan that is really eco-friendly and a good forester to go with it. (We have 400 acres).

I like pine trees.

Yeah!! I'd say you're good on the "plant-a-tree-thing" too!! 10,000...WOW!!

GOOD FOR YOU!!

Wish we had that much land and could plant that many trees.

I hear it takes between 8 and 13 years to prune a tree to reach "Christmas Tree" height and width. So, if we started planting some now, every year, my DD could start cutting down her own Xmas trees beginning when she's about 13-18 years old. By that time, she'd be old enough to carry on that traditon of planting every year.

We have a fibre optic tree that we put up every year. We only put the lights on every so often so it doesn't cost much and you barely have to decorate it due to the built in lights.

This is us too (with the males in the family). It's why we can't have pets either.

We have used the same artificial tree for the 5 yrs. that we have been married. It was an old tree that my inlaws had stopped using and was just storing in their shed. I bought a 6 ft. tree for 2 dollars last Jan. We put it up, but didn't like it. I put it back in the box and gave it someone who need one at church.

My husband is scared of fire hazard with a real tree, plus we have never had the extra money for a real tree.
