Most stores in the US will not do this unless it's a "mom n' pop" type place. The liability issues of even giving away less than perfect produce is so large that it's not worth the risk to the stores.

Likewise, it could be given to the employees, but most stores will not allow this either as breakage goes up, because often employees will damage the packaging so they can take the items home for free.

And at that time there were a group of younger people (some teens, some adults) and it was a pretty large size group of people, that would hang around the food court and wait until someone finished whatever they were eating and if that person left their plate on the table, this group of people would move in on it. There were even a few that were bold enough to go through the trash cans. It was disgusting and the mall security soon removed these people from the mall but it left quite the impression on my mind.
Maybe that was the only way those people could eat. My understanding is that freegans don't eat food that has been eaten by others. They take things like the produce that isn't perfect that gets thrown out, bakery breads that get thrown out at the end of the day, packaged food that gets thrown out for whatever reason, etc.

You are correct, likewise, Freegans are vegans, thus I highly doubt they were eating leftover food from a food court.

Most people fail to see a big difference between a homeless person that is dumpster diving for food to eat and a freegan or gleaner that is saving perfectly good food from a landfill. One is a necessity the other is almost more of a politcal statement about waste in this country.

We "dumpster dive" because the waste is insane, not because we are poor, as we make over $70K a year, so we an afford the buy groceries and the like.

My friend Barb the Freegan is not trying to make any political statement nor does she do it because she can't afford to buy it - she owns a 1 ton pig. She initially started doing it to get food for the pig, the guys who work at the stores she goes to started giving her everything they throw away before it went to the dumpsters. A lot of the food is fine, still sealed, not spoiled, and some is just close to being expired. Barb and her husband realized they were getting way more than what they needed for the pig so they started eating some of it. The excess bakery gets burned for heat and the wasted food goes to compost. Barb is really cheap, she could care less about the environment

I'll start by saying this is not something I would ever do. First of all, food is thrown out for various reasons and by dumpster diving you might never know why something that looks fine was trashed---until you are in the ER dying from it. Plus, even if what you pull out is fine, think about eating food that was in the dumpster where bathroom trash etc. was thrown. Dirty diapers, feminine products etc. who knows. I think it is a dangerous practice and anybody doing it would be crazy to put themselves and especially their children at that type of risk. We had a lady here doing it and she later found out the grocery store and veterinary clinic shared the same dumpster---I'll leave it at that.
