Spinning off from the my little Pony thread- what if we had just one of everything? Kids- one bike, one truck or car, one doll. Moms- one purse, one phone for the house, etc.

Do you think that would change how you appreciated, enjoyed and took care of things?

I think some things are more fun in multiples- for example, 5 match box cars are more fun than just one, but my ds probably has 100 acquired over his five years.

I wonder why we are so obsessed with the "one is good, a lot more is better" mentality?

I think that even extends to eating- one cookie is good- heck, I'll eat half the bag!

I, for one, think we really lose the true enjoyment of an item when we have too many. It becomes a burden.

Oh my word this sounds like complete and utter FREEDOM! It reminds me of the olden days like "Little House on the Prairie" times. They didn't have 15 cars and 7 dolls, 4 coats and 12 pairs of shoes. Their things lasted longer because they took good care of them - they were all they had! Thank you for helping me realize that even though I've decluttered, I still have more paring down to do.

This sounds a little bit like us! We have one television, one computer, one stereo, one telephone for our landline, one set of winter shoes (summer shoes are flip flops so we have a couple pairs each -they can be unreliable as they age!), one cell phone, one winter coat. I have one purse, one watch, one dressy outfit (which I can mix & match with a lot of my shirts).

I can't think of much else right now, but this is how we try to keep it, unless it doesn't make sense to only have one of a specific something. It saves a lot of money and time, because we just don't replace anything until it there is something wrong with it. AND I don't have to clean everything else that we could have but choose not to. It gets really hard sometimes seeing my sister and sister in law all dolled up in their brand new clothes with their 90 dollar heels.

There are a lot of things were one is better. One thing I can't stop myself from accumulating is books! They take over the house. Of course one book isn't realistic. But really, is more than 20 books per person a good thing? I don't know. Maybe this should be a whole other post?

I'm a reader, too

I usually borrow books from the library, but when I do buy one, it's because our library doesn't have it. I buy it used online, and then donate it to the library when I'm done. That way, it's always there if I want to read it again, it doesn't clutter up my house, and other people can enjoy it too! Usually I see if any of my friends or family want to read it first, but they aren't much for reading. I don't know how they do it!

I also donated my childhood books (save a few favorites for sentimentality) to the local parochial school's library, which doesn't get any money from the state like public schools. They really appreciated it, and it made me feel really good to help out.

That would be awesome. I know the family wouldn't fly along on that trip, though.

Yeah, books- can't have just one! Or twenty... Even Ma and Pa Ingalls had more than one. I have only a very small bookshelf where I keep my all time favorites, but we have children's books on just about every surface of the house. That is my biggest splurge, over-the-line, more, more, more item. I'm bad for books!

This would be a dream come true. I just don't think I could get my husband to go along with it. I am just imagining the extra money we could have if we sold two tv's, one car and all the extra little stuff we don't need.

My dream would be for one of those shows (Clean Sweep, Clean House) to come to my house and take it all away.
