After reading some information on the North Pacific Gyre (an area in the Pacific Ocean where the currents push everything together) and its Africa-sized continent of plastic garbage free floating in the middle of the ocean, I have decided that I will not be using any more plastic diapers on my baby. All of the plastic we have produced will not biodegrade for around 100,000 years!
Has anyone used cloth diapers, and if so, do you have any tips to share? I had looked into getting them when my baby was newborn, but they seemed really expensive. I had also heard that they didn't help save the environment because of the amount of water required to constantly wash them, but I have my doubts about this now. It seems fishy, like some kind of rumor the diaper companies started to keep our cash flowing their way. Diapers are after all, P & G's number one selling product.

Some great resources for cloth diapers are Cloth Diapers, Cloth Diaper Covers, bumGenius, Bummis, Kissaluvs and MORE from the top Ranked Online Cloth Diaper Store and diaperswappers.com. Yes, the initial cost is expensive but it will save you $$ over the long term especially if you have more children. I've used my cloth diapers on 4 kids so you can imagine how much $$ we've saved.
Additionally you can resell your diapers when you're done with them. That's how I started out, I bought some Fuzzi Bunz from a friend whose youngest had just potty trained. If you have any questions feel free to IM me .

My mom used cloth for all 5 of us; I want to use cloth for my next baby. There are still some diaper services around too.

I use cloth pockets, and prefolds with a wool wrap.. Just depends on my mood of the day LOL..
Like PP said.. Check out Diaperswappers.com I have 3 pocket dipes up for sale on there right now.. They need some TLC 1 has seen better days... I can send you linkie to pic, they are priced cheap 5.00 PPD each.. I can include a insert if you wanted to try 1 out or something
The thing with cloth that I like is that I dont ever have to run to the store cuase we ran out of diapers.. Plus DS has never had a rash.. Thankfully.. And its just way easier. and healthier for our earth.
We use swaddlebees side snap, and fuzzi bunz... Dont get fooled into buying new, you can buy used and they are just as good.. All my stash is from used diapers.. I have smalls, mediums and some larges.. Smalls are ready for the next baby, and mediums I'm still using for DS, and larges are for when he grows out of these.. Not for a while though...
PM me if you need any advice or help on how to care for them.. If you get on diaperswappers... PM me taranbabyjayden

Another vote for diaperswappers.com. It's a great place to learn everything there is to know about cloth and buy/sell used diapers. We use Fuzzi Bunz and LOVE them. Most of them I bought used then sold when he outgrew them (about 85% return).

Also if you can sew you can make them yourself. I have made all the ones that my little one uses and I have even sold to some people. I even knit his covers and sew some out of fleece. It really is satisfying to see your kid in something that you have made yourself. Missy mom to 5

We CD'ed our 2nd dd. I will be CD'ing any other children we do have. I am so thankful we made the switch and really wish we would've CD'ed our first..but dh and I were uninformed. However with our 2nd dd I wanted to CD her from birth but dh was completely against it. But thankfully we made the change and will not TURN back!! She's potty trained now but does wear cloth for naps and bedtime.
Thankfully I sew and am able to sew covers and diapers and wipes of my own..along with making my own wipe solution.

I don't think this is a good idea
I was telling everyone I am going to save $$$$$$
I sew bunch of them for my twins, got soft cheep fabric spent time on making them....It didn't work out at all !!!!
I had to change them every 15 min + my girls was waking up and cry all because they stay wet... I bought some from Wal-Mart and still
++++ bunch of laundry and you will spend $$$ on this.
Pardon my writting I am no American.

I totally disagree with kuzya.
Having cloth diapers adds about two loads of washing to my washing pile a week. Dont see how much waste on that will occur. Its almost the same if you say , you might as well buy new clothes every day becuase washing them hurts the environment and wastes water. Any way somewhere I read the process of making disposables uses more water than acutally washing your cloth ones!
Whats nice is the fact that my DD does not sit in her own pee or poop as she tells you about it the moment its happend - unlike disposables. My daughter has never had a rash from the diapers. My mom says its easier to potty train children that use cloth, because they know about when they are wet - than the children that have disposables - I will just have to see on that one however.
We could only afford the old fashioned cloth diapers, but even so when you actually put pen to paper and worked out the cost of just bying the diapers and the cleaning products compared to three years of disposables - you can easily see the diffrence. And honestly a little bit of extra washing and the tiny bit of effort to get up off your bottom and go hang up the washing is a small price to pay for helping the environment.
