One of our simple holiday pleasures is celebrating St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6.

The kids left their shoes out last night and were so excited to find the pj's and other treats St. Nick left for them ( an orange in one shoe, candy cane in the other). This afternoon we will be making St. Nicholas Day cookies.

It's one of those things we look forward to every year.

Our kids also enjoy St Nicholas Day! St Nicholas always leaves them chocolate letters, it's a Dutch tradition that we picked up when we lived overseas. They also got new winter hats/gloves, wind up chattering teeth (LOL), a little rocket set and a snow block maker.

HAPPY ST NICHOLAS DAY!

St. Nick must be a geographical thing, I never celebrated the day as a kid, but here in WI most people do so we ahve picked up the tradition and the girls love it! But I don't know the "story" of st nick so when they ask why he comes I don't have a very good answer! Does anyone know the story?

I have heard of it but never really knew what it was. I will have to do some checking on it.

Being Traditional Catholic, we also celebrate St Nicholas. For us we talk about how St. Nicholas served God by caring for those in need. Because Nicholas always wanted people to praise and thank God, not him, he did good deeds in secret--hence leaving your shoes out and he comes at night. The kids were very excited this morning. Then later we are going to bake cookies and drop them off at the neighbors--secretly. And deliver some food to a local food bank.

Tons of info online...just google. The stories can vary a bit. Also some cute books geared towards kids, so maybe check your library as well.
