I use these everyday! But this came out this week! Does anyone know where I can get steel or metal ones? It sounds like I should really toss our whole collection. Everyone uses them in our family. We never buy bottled water and always carry our own.

Why not just use plain old Rubbermaid bottles or regular sports bottles?

I think all plastic reusable products have the same issue .. they are staying move to glass or metal .. but not sure where to find unbreakable glass or leakproof metal.

it sounded like to me it was only the canada store pulling them from their shelves not all stores.. i think we tend to jump to conclusion when we see articles like this. i personally would wait to see what develops but if you don't feel comfortable still using you can get the metal water bottles at any major outdoor sporting goods store.

i think of over the years how many fears the media and articles like this have placed out there and many of them unsubstantiated.

I got from the article that they weren't sure, but were pulling them for now until they had better test results. I'll wait for the final verdict. With two kids doing sports and my ds camping & hiking with boy scouts, nalgene bottles have been great for us. I'll have to have proof before I give up their positives.

I had a really good site on those metal bottles and I can't find it now.

I've been following the plastic debate for a bit and this is what I have decided to do.
- I don't microwave any plastic containers.
- I'm tossing the plastic that is broken or scratched -- especially in sippy cups as my daughter chewed on them all when she was younger. She is starting to get a little old for sippy cups but I like them for when she's moving around or we're driving down the road.
- I also don't keep fluids in them for long periods of time. With water bottles, for me, there is a tendency when you're partly done to fill them back up without emptying the old stuff out.
- And I'm starting to phase out my plastic. Slow and steady. I just haven't found anything to replace my plastic containers for left overs.

I just looked this up and found that Nalgene does make safter alternatives to the (#7) type of bottles that many of you may currently be using. The article below also mentions a company that makes stainless-steel bottles. Here's the site: Nalgene bottles (which is a division of National Geographic...)

Here's what it said:

If you love the style and design of Nalgene bottles, there's no reason to avoid the entire company because of the potential risks posed by polycarbonate. Nalgene makes a wide variety of bottles, some of which are made from safer #2, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and #4, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), plastics (www.nalgene-outdoor.com).

If you do decide to give up plastic for good, try a stainless-steel bottle like Klean Kanteen's 27-ounce bottle with a #5 polypropylene cap ($13.95; www.kleankanteen.com).

For additional safer, refillable plastic water bottles, see "Picnic Perfect Plastics," GG#114.

At the link above are also instructions for the best way to care for and clean your Nalgene bottles, and what a survey said about how other Nalgene customers used and cleaned theirs.

NOTE: Still looking for for info. on the above mentioned recall...Will post what I find.

I like this website: Reusable Bags - Eco-friendly reusable bags, plus facts & news on plastic bag issue

I ordered my Sigg bottles from them and have been very pleased.
