Okay- I admit it- I am a stockpiler. So my question is: do you think stockpiling is "against" simple living since it is taking up space OR part of simple living since you have it on hand and you don't have to go out of your way to get toliet paper?

Thoughts?

I think stockpiling could be simple, if you do not go overboard with it.

Stockpiling for me simplifies my life for two reasons 1. less trips to the store and 2. I feel very secure knowing that there is food in my house to feed my family! I am a true gatherer!

I used to stock pile a lot- and wasted a lot. Now my rule is this: one open and one in reserve. That way I am not caught unprepared but don't have three years worth of toothpaste hanging around, either.

I agree, if you stockplie just enough to get you till it's at a low price again on things you would by regularly.

Ooh I like that idea! As my SIL once said, that's "the good of best both" (trying to say "best of both worlds")

Over the years my stockpiling has benefited me in several ways

When DH was unemployed (with no compensation) and my hours at work were unexpectedly cut in half - we had enough food in the house to get by on spending less then $10 a week on food for several weeks.

When the food bank at our church is low I can fill a bag and drop it off.

When my DD is low on funds and needs some food to get through the days/week till payday I have plenty to share.

Last minute pot lucks or guests are no problem there is always something I can put together.

I seldom ever HAVE to go to the store to get anything I ran out of and need right away.

So yes it makes my life simpler, it reduces the trips to the store and saves me a lot of money because I buy it on sale with a coupon.

I do not feel comfortable unless I have a couple weeks (at least) worth of food in my cupboards. I wouldn't stock pile something that will go to waste--frozen, canned and dried goods only.
