Jenifer I saw a woman on Oprah that did the same thing with all of her chidren's stuff and then gave the organized box of stuff to them when they were grown up! All of the kids thought it was the BEST gift ever. And it was basically free.

I think the important thing is to know what the real problem is. Is the mess because you have too much stuff, or is it truly just because you are disorganized? Sometimes it's ok to keep stuff if it has a home and you love it.

Most of the stuff I have lying around needs to just be gotten rid of, so decluttering is my problem.

Emotionally/Psychologically, I always feel a great "boost" after a trip to the donation drop off of my local thrift store. Decluttering makes me feel like a load has been lifted, and it's great to think that someone else who truly needed something I gave away has it now! It also opens up space in my life for what brings me joy, whatever good thing that may be.

I also agree with the you can't organize if you don't declutter!

A few years ago I used to have issues with getting rid of things. I came got over that one day while having a family get together at my Grandma's house, she is a collector of many things. They have a nice sized home, yet our family was having issues finding space to sit or even stand in a crowd to talk, all because my grandma has stuff everywhere (it's not messy, just very cluttered with things!). Someone brought it up if grandma would get rid of a few things, we could move around a lot better in her home. My grandma's response was I am not doing anything with my collection, you all will have to take care of it while I am gone. Right then and there I decided that I need to stop this habit before it got to that point!

Now that my pap is gone and grandma is realizing that she does not need all of her things, each week it seems that grandma is giving away a few of her things (much to my dismay, she seems to be getting rid of some of her doll collection to my youngst who loves dolls!).

Although I am putting stuff I don't want for a yardsale in the basement but whatever I don't sell I donate. I can't wait to get rid of all this stuff

I agree that it is very freeing to get rid of stuff. It also makes me reconsider other things I bring into the house.

We are very similar! I have areas in my house where clutter will accumulate but most of the time my home is very clean. When i do get to organizing, I tend to donate/recycle/throw away A LOT of stuff! Stuff just bothers me... Some people are great at being eclectic and artsy with their large amount of things, i just become messy and overwhelmed...
