Dh wants us to start buying organic milk, at least for the girls. I haven't until now because just in passing at HyVee I want to say it was almost $6.00/gallon. He is willing to cut down on Mountain Dew so it will make the grocery budget easier to buy the milk. Where have you found is the cheapest or best place to buy organic milk?

I buy Horizon Organic and it is the same price at Walmart/Target, 2 half gallons for $6. It is a few cents more expensive at my grocery store but I pick it up there out of convenience.

Kroger has had the cheapest I've found, their organic brand is usually $2.55/half gallon ($5.10 /gallon) here, and once in a very rare while on sale for a little cheaper than that.

Whole Foods has a brand that is not organic but doesn't have rBGH, if you want a compromise. It is the cheapest of any kind of milk I can find around here, barring special sales: $3.59/gallon. That's cheaper than the regular milk at our grocery stores, but with no rBGH which is one of the big worries.

I pay $5.59 for a gallon of skim at a local organic market called My Organic Market. It's the cheapest I've found. Grocery stores in the area usually sell it for $3+ for a half gallon.

I buy ours at Trader Joes. It's $5.49/gallon. They also have hormone free milk (that's not organic just hormone free) and it's about $2 cheaper.

I am fortunate to live in San Diego and have most of the organic/health store chains near me. On sale I can get 2 half gallons for $6 on occasion. Mostly it will go on sale for 2 for $7. When it's on sale I get it at Ralphs or Albertsons (regular grocery store chains). I buy the Organic Valley or Stremicks brand. We have had bad luck with the Horizon milk. Every time we bought them, they tasted really bad. Not sour, just yucky.

But you can get Horizon at Costco and I believe Sam's. Vons also has their own brand of organic items called "O". Haven't tried the milk, but I see it on sale every so often for 2 for $6.

To help with the cost, register on the company website for coupons or get on a coupon train and request organic milk coupons. In fact, there were some organic milk coupons in the inserts a couple of times in the last month or so.

You should also check your local food co-op.

I also forgot to mention that some stores (like Wild Oats, Henry's Marketplace, Sprouts, and Whole Foods) will over a case discount. It's usually about 10% off the regular price. Can't hurt to ask your local stores too.

We used to by Lactaid milk primarily because it lasts so long - a really long expiration date. It is also about $3 a half gallon. We don't use milk a lot but it is nice to have on hand so Lactaid worked for us. With DD in the house, it was easy to switch over to organic milk. It is the same price and same long expiration date. If you want, you can mix the milk 50/50 with reconstituted organic milk and save a little money.

We get our milk delivered from a local dairy that is in it's 4th year of organic certification. (It has 3 more years before they can techinically call themselves organic, but have been "organic" since they opened in the 1800's). They have 1/2 gallons of organic milk in glass containers for $2.19. It's way cheaper than if we bought it at the store, plus it's delivered so no going to the store then buying a bunch of stuff we don't need. They also deliver our 1/2 & 1/2 once a week for our coffee. The nice thing about this dairy is that they deliver milk in less than 24 hours after they milk the cows.
