I can't figure out why anyone would buy organic? To me the label just seems like an excuse to charge more. My family is always realitively healthy, what do we have to gain by eating organic?
I am not poking fun, I seriously don't understand why anyone would buy it. Convince me.

One friend of mine, on a VERY tight budget, buys organic. She says the produce tastes better and that she doesn't want all those hormones and pesticides and such in her food. My brother's family buys organic milk as they have had early cancers in their family (my bro just got diagnosed w/ cancer this week) and they believe that the hormones in regular milk contribute to breast cancer (which his wife had at 41). Since they have all daughters & strong hereditary tendency towards breast cancer, they have been on organic milk for 15years.

But is there any proof that these hormones actually contribute to the cancer rates?

I don't have specific studies on the top of my head, but their have been studies that have attributed the rise in cancer to the rise in chemical uses.
If you were really interested in learning about it, a good book would be Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.
I think the word organic is used half the time for marketing purposes and it's too bad. The idea is a good one. I'm not one for convincing someone of something when it's just a personal choice.

All I know is that my brother did a lot of research on it and it was convincing enough for him to switch to organic milk with no hormones to help reduce the risk of a cancer returning on his wife, or occurring on his daughters. He's "Mr. Medicine" in our family (had a scholarship to Stanford Medical School but gave it up to stay home as my father chose that precise moment to walk out, and he felt obligated to be the man of the house rather than leaving my mom w/ 3 girls to raise alone). He has the money, so he can afford it.
Edited to add: Consumer Health Journal
Article says hormones in milk are linked to increase in ovarian cancer, breast cancer (which my SIL had an nieces are at risk for), and prostate cancer, which my brother just got diagnosed with this week. Some places do sell hormone-free milk that is not organic, like momofezl mentions, below. My store does not. My brother buys organic. I use rice milk or almond milk.

I researched it a ton and could not find anything to convince me that I needed to switch to organic fruits and vegetables.
I have no idea if this is a reliable source but I found this article very interesting.

I Guess My Question Would Be How Much of a Risk are You cutting Back IF you eat Organic?
But What Good is It Going to Do if Your Body is exposed to Other Chemicals Constantly?
We Don't Know what we're eating When We go out to eat do We ?Or eating at Our Friends Houses or Gatherings.
Not to Mention all the Toxins in the air we Breath.
It is Scary I Agree.
I guess I Just Don't Understand Why some People will Only Drink organic Milk , but will Get A Milk shake and Chicken sandwich at the mall. Which Are probably not organic.
Also I Have read studies that Claim that a Food Only has to Be a Small Percentage "organic' to be Considered Organic.
Is that True?
If so How Do you know what you are Getting?
I have always Had Questions about organic too. Good question happymom

Organic crops are not treated with synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Animals on organic farms
are not given hormones, drugs, and antibiotics to promote more rapid growth. Genetically modi-fied organisms are not used on any organic farms.
Organic food is grown and processed by following the standards of the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP). These standards describe when and how organic food products can use the USDA organic seal. When you see this seal, you can be assured the item
is certified organic. Additives such as hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener)and monosodium glutamate (MSG) are banned under this seal.
Organic farmers manage the natural cycles of the earth and animals. Most combine crops and live-stock to build better soil, have healthier animals, and prevent pests all of which are sustainable farming practices. Organic food companies use production methods that keep the important vita-mins, minerals, flavors, and antioxidants in organic food.
