I don't see anything wrong with people wanting nice things. As long as the bills are paid and food is on the table and you are using cash than why not get your self something once in awhile. I do believe in having less stuff and not being materialistic but As long as you get rid of five or even ten things before you bring in one. I don't like clutter so I go through my stuff all the time and I am careful about what I bring in. If you work for your money and have things paid and food than I believe it is all right to buy a want once in awhile.

It seems like alot of people on this board are totally against having nice things, like it's wrong to want "things" in their homes.

Ok , Can you Give some examples , cause I Am Tottally Confused as to who here thinks this.

I'm not against anyone having nice things. I am not against ANYONE having things.

I am against MYSELF having too many things, nice or not.

Whoever said the thing about Target. lol Target is a luxury for me. Anyway, I agree w/ chicky hip, I look around at the stuff I have and don't need and I just want to get a big garbage bag and toss it! Then I see something I just love at Target and want to buy it. Does that make sense? I would rather have a small amt. of nice things (or that I love) than a house full of crap.

I could have written this post. Liamsmom, it is too bad you live on the opposite side of the country from me. I always agree with your posts and I think we would be good "real life" friends!

Well said. I have many really nice things. Simple living isn't about not having nice things. It's about appreciating and caring for the nice things in your life and living in such a way that you can enjoy the things you do have (often by having fewer things but not things that are less nice.)

I'm the one who made the Target comment, sorry, I didn't mean to offend.
I am mostly referring to my own past "issues" with Target. I would never stick to my list and end up buying a bunch of stuff I didn't need simply because it was such a good price (hence, my house full of cr**) I find nice things at Target all the time, I just have to either have a lot of self control or avoid it completely (which actually works best for me ).

BTW, Maggie I wish we weren't on separate coasts too, I've been feeling like that more and more lately with some of you ladies!

I think simple living is about freeing-up resources so you can have the nice things you want.

Marymac, I think it's the tone of your post, but it seemed to me to be angry as if the advice given were against you somehow? That is not the intention. I have been so blessed to find this site because I was drowning in CLUTTER and feeling hopeless and stressed! I couldn't see what I loved and what was no longer useful to me, it was just too much for me to deal with. I would often escape from my house because I didn't know where to begin and I would go to thrift stores just to buy more clutter to bring home. Then I began reading the posts and realized what kind of home I longed for -one that's peaceful! If I am bringing in more wall decorations but I don't have any more wall space to hang them then it's a waste of money (no matter if I spent $1 or $50) and overkill and it adds to my stress level. If, however I get rid of the clutter (which most of the time is perfectly good stuff, just not what I want anymore) then when I come home with that perfect piece it has a place to go and brings me and my family joy and doesn't take away from the peace.
