I don't see anything wrong with wanting nice things. I just remodeled my 1 year old daughter's room and spent around $1,000 on it. She has a 32" TV too and I don't regret getting her those things. I didn't have much growing up and I want my kids to be able to have what they want.

As long as all other bills are paid for then I don't see a problem with it.
Some people have the priorities screwed up and buy "things" they do not need but then say they can't afford their health insurance, medication, food, etc. Don't expect others to help pay for those things if you can go buy a big screen tv, Wii, etc.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having or purchasing nice things. I think the problem is when people are spending money on things they can't afford to keep up w/others or make themselves feel better.

I'm trying to pick quality over quantity. I have nice things but I am trying to get rid of all the rest of the stuff. I'm all about paying cash for things these days.

Dh's parents built the house MIL had always wanted but they waited until their kids were grown and gone. My parents had a ton of stuff left over that they couldn't use because they downsized, and his parents had a ton of stuff they didn't want to use because she decorated the house in a totally different style than her old home. Now we have lots of antiques and great artwork that were totally free!
Same here. My dad moved across country and most of his furniture and paintings went to us and it was all really nice stuff! When my best friends mom moved and got a new livingroom set we got her old one which was in excellent condition. We have been very blessed with our families generosity and frequent moving.

I also have rescued furniture and refinished it. I got a gorgeous antique pie table that had a leg broken from a friend that was going to throw it away. Dh fixed the table and refinished it.

My house is nicely decorated at low to no cost to us.

Lots of food for thought here! I personally like to splurge on something really nice once in awhile. I think I appreciate that so much more than just buying "things" all the time.

I try to live by this quote
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” -William Morris

If I see something I love or can use (really use, not just justify in my mind that I'll eventually use it) and I can afford it then I'll buy it. I won't buy something just because it's cute, cheap or I may use in 5 years.

Exactly, it's more special if you don't do it very often.

`I do have a lot of nice things. clothes, computers, home decor. the thing is before i buy any of that I'm sure their is food in the house and bills are paid. I can afford these things because i never pay full price. i stock up when their are sales. thanks to cvs I'll never have to pay for tooth past again. buy doing this i save money to buy what i want. even thoughts things i buy on sale though. and clearance. my dishes went on clearance at meijer so i treated my self to the entire new set. all my towels rags and such match my bathroom decor. it's funny because i watch people that don't send their money right and think that they can not survive on what they make. but my DH and i have less cash and more stuff that we want. in fact i think that some people think my DH and i get a lot more then we do. truthfully we get about 1500 a month. once you have your necessities and their is money left enjoy it and get what you want. just don't for get retirement savings and emergencies. that and avoid credit cards. if you can shop write then why not enjoy your life, too. that and rent a center can get expensive but for things like my laptop for college it's like lay a way but you can use the stuff now. don't feel bad for wanting nice things just don't spend more then you can afford. and shop around because you might find it cheaper. i love when i do that. ( I am gulty of paying full price on my crib set for Angel, but hey we should all have that privlage once in a wile )

I like nice things, too. My 18 year old dishes and 12 year sofa are still perfectly good because I bought the best I could afford at the time and haven't had to invest in new ones in all that time. But, I have to agree with whoever said it's the people who complain about not having money to feed their kids but have brand new everything else that are a problem for me. A woman in a group I belong to was always saying she was unemployed and they could barely make it on her husband's salary, were to the point of going to a food pantry, etc. So, as a surprise, the group decided to adopt her family for Christmas. Everyone bought gifts and donated food for Christmas dinner (at some sacrifice to their own budgets). So, image OUR surprise when the gifts were delivered to her $300k home and accepted by the housekeeper. The kids were in their private school and Mom had gone out to lunch driving the brand new Suburban. Not cool.
