My local paper had a column today about when it is and isn't worth the extra cost to buy organic food. Find the article here: Organic food can be worth the cost -- -- themorningcall.com

Worth it is very subjective. I will probably value the benefits of organics differently than others. A family struggling to pay the bills might be able to scrape up the difference in cost but might not see the nutritional or environmental benefits as the best way to use those precious dollars. On the other end of the scale, a wealthy family might consider paying two or three times the cost as an obvious choice to improve their diet and avoid pesticides.

Most of us fall in between and make a wide range of choices.

Gotta love voluntary choices!

I always try to do the "dirty dozen" (fruits and veggies that are most affected by pesticides) You can't buy health!

We always try to buy organic or hormone/antibiotic free. With packaged goods I already read the labels even if it says "organic" on it because often times it is only partially organic or it has other bad stuff in it like high fructose corn syrup, MSG or hydrogenated oils/transfats in it.

But we are in the income bracket where we can afford to pay a little more for the organic stuff. If I was in a lower income bracket I would still try to buy organic when I could, but it probably wouldn't be as often.

I just started buying organic milk and eggs. It is a start. As I can afford to do more, I will. I am making it a habit to compare the costs of organic to nonorganic. I will buy what my budget allows.
