... but evidently not.

But on the bright side, I received an email this morning from Humane Society of the United States stating that the "USDA announced that it will implement a complete ban on slaughter for human consumption of cattle unable to stand and walk unassisted."

As far as I knew, that was always the law. We used to raise cattle, and none of the processing facilities around here would take animals unless they could walk. Maybe Wisconsin has stricter laws.

It's not exactly the best guideline - but maybe the best they can do. Perfectly healthy animals sometimes break legs, but the meat would still be good. That's a loss of $1000. We'd have to call the fur farm to come and get them - and they would charge us for the service.

I'm pretty sure that's the law and has been for a while - for any food animal, not just cattle. That's why that slaughterhouse in CA go nailed a few months ago - they were still moving downed cattle onto the line.

They just had a big upheavel with a place in California that was running down and sick animals through the processing plant. I kept getting videos emailed to me where they were showing a fork lift picking up a cow. I never actually watched it. There was a huge recall, as I recall most of the meat was going to fast food, many people were fired, and I believe that the plant was closed down. I don't know where animals with broken legs would fall into on this catagory.

You would think it was a given. That is why the cheap meat at the grocery store doesn't appeal to me.
