This is an excellent article!

Circle of friends: The importance of other people in our preparedness plans By Claire Wolfe 111

Do you have friends you can work with in a situation like this? Do you belong to a food co-op or do you barter with your neighbors?

don't belong to a food co-op, but we do have family friends that we could/would do this with if needed. We also have 2 sets of neighbors that we currently swap fresh fruit and vegs. & homemade baked products with.

I have always said that having "social equity" is just as important as any other kind. We barter like crazy ...eggs for babysitting, computer repair for tree cutting, etc...it works great for all of us. We also have a big group that swaps around DVD's , books, games, tools, etc...Why does everyone on the block NEED the SAME things??

We used to have a bartering system with our neighbours when I was younger. People would build/cook things or look after children. This was in exchange for tokens with you would then swap for some other service. It worked well until people started to move out of the area and less social people moved in. Unfortunately this kind of scheme would never work now. I don't even know who my neighbours are. They seem to not even want to say hello so there is no sense of community.
