Can't just toss them.

I use a lot for rags but let's face it, I have enough rags to last me for a LONG time. I use some for linings on different items that I sew, like baby blankets.

But what else?

I use mine for rags as well. I cut them into about 6 or 8 inch pieces. Right now I'm using my rags for stripping woodwork upstairs and have to toss them after I use them (they stiffen up and can't reuse) so my old towels that are getting ratty will get cut up for more rags. Sorry, I'm not creative.

Our humane society always wants old towels - they use them in some of the pets cages and also when they are bathing the pets.

I use some of our old towels to dry off the car after we wash it, to keep for the girls to towel off with after playing in the water, etc.

I use mine as car washin' towels, my ds uses them when he washes his bike or gokart, I also give them to my dh for shop rags, that way he can throw them away after they get too greasy.

If I have way too many I put them in with my Goodwill Donation, a friend of mine told me that they recycle any of the old clothes and stuff that is too stained or beat up to sell and make them into shop type rags.

We toss them into our camping gear crate. You'd be surprised at how many towels you can go through in the rain, especially when there's no laundromat nearby. They won't dry once they're used as long as it's raining, even if you hang them up under a tarp, so you just have to keep using a new one until it stops.

Our Humane Society also loves to receive old towels, blankets and sheets.

You can cut old fabric (towels are fine) into strips and you them for plant ties.

If they aren't bad I donate them and if they are really bad then I toss them. I know we had something like 4 boxes of rags in the garage - some were still nice towels just we weren't using pink anymore and weren't about to start using them again. I have heard about donating them to animal shelters as well - mine didn't get that far as I couldn't justify the extra gallon of gas and they went with my other donations.

I give them to my husband - he works in steel mills and oil refineries, and wipes as clean as he can before leaving the jobsite at the end of day.

I also set a few aside for the dogs - drying off after trips to the beach (they swim every weekend!) before getting in the car, and to use on them after baths.
