SweetSurprise - Factual Information About Common Sweeteners like Sugar, Honey and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) They have a website and advertisements. Of course what they neglect to mention is that HFCS has been placed in nearly everything and that Americans are eating way sugar in general. And, from my understanding, the body does not break down HFCS like it does normal sugar.

But check it out. I especially enjoyed the two TV ads that they have placed in here.

According to the Mayo Clinic, animal studies have shown a link between increased consumption of high-fructose corn syrup and adverse health effects, such as diabetes and high cholesterol.

All the negative press about HFCS must be hurting sales of some of the products, if they need to advertise.

The only reason it's in everything is because it's cheaper than sugar. Although, I wonder if that will change soon, since the price of corn keeps going up.

I'm still avoiding it for my family.

Thanks for the link! HFCS is personally not one of my concerns. I heard the argument that it wasn't "natural" like sugar, but sugar is processed from beets or sugar cane, just as this is processed from corn - once I realized that I decided not to worry about it. This website made me feel a little validated.

Also, the website says that HFCS is not metabolised any differently from any other sweetener (it's under the FAQs page). That myth came from studies focusing on pure fructose - HFCS is around 50% fructose, about the same as sugar.

ITA with melsb - We eat too much of all sugars, that is the real problem. Making treats at home is my best way of combating this, but I don't know if it's helping.

By the way, I noticed the chart says most honey is imported from China. Interesting.

Dr Oz isn't selling HFCS and here is what he has to say about it.

Food Hall of Shame

There is zero HFCS in my home.

I do agree that there is overall too much sugar in our diets, no matter what form it's in.
However, we are also a HFCS free house. It is very processed and I am leery of very processed foods.
It wasn't easy to go HFCS free, it took time and small changes. First, we stopped buying foods with partially hydro oils and got used to that. Then I tackled HFCS about 6 months ago and now we are finally all adjusted. I'm happy to see more companies making an effort, I've been pleasantly surprised a few times recently.
Oh, and I trust Dr. Oz more than food companies who are trying to increase sales...
