I want to start reading the bible. Where do I start? Which version do I want - New or Old Testament? And do you just pick it up and read it like any other book?

I would read John first (The 4th book in the New Testament). The first 4 books all tell the same story from different perspectives but John writes a little more clearly than the others. You can then either read the other gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke to get their perspectives or you can move on to Acts. Then the other books after Acts can be read in order.
I have found too often that people that start in Genesis get bogged down quickly. History is important but having a basic understanding of the real person of Jesus has helped me to understand the Old Testament better than if I had read it first.
In terms of versions, I like using BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 50 versions and 35 languages. and reading many versions of the same verse. Each translation gives a slightly different interpretation. I generally read the New International Version, The English Standard Version, and occasionally the King James for it's poetic value .. the Psalms and proverbs are beautiful in the KJV. Just comparing the different version yourself will give you an idea which ones you find easier to read and understand.
I agree that you should start with John. I would also recommend that, at least at first, you stick with one of the "newer" translations that is somewhat easier to understand - like the New International Version - as opposed to the King James Version.

I agree with others, the New Testament is a great place to start. The gospels (first four books) introduce you to Jesus, his birth, ministry, death, and resurrection. James is also a great book with a lot of great life application. Personally, I usually stick with the New International Version... it reads easily and this is the version I use for Bible Study.
When reading for pleasure or encouragement, I like a parrallel Bible that has the NIV on one side and the same verses in the Message on the other side. The Message is more of a today's language paraphrase. niv/message - Christianbook.com Search

I would also suggest a NIV study bible. It will help you translate what the Bible is saying. It sure was a saver to me when I started and I still use it. It breaks down what is being said and it gives bio's on the people in the Bible.
I am so glad you are starting. I woud read Proverbs before to long they are a wealth of information.
