I don't have a SN child per se, but I do have 3 young kids and 2 of them have their own issues. My 5 year old DS doesn't seem to be adapting to well to K because he is a "young" kindergartner. He was also pretty sick with pneumonia last month My girl twin who is 2 has hip dysplasia and is doing well, but they still aren't sure if she needs a major hip surgery or not. I do not have a strong willed personality and I am very sensitive and I feel like it is all bothering me more than maybe it should. I had PPD with the birth of my first son and then took Zoloft to prevent it with my twins. I am off it now and do suffer from a few really bad PMS days a month. I thought about trying it again to help me focus and deal with things more clearly, esp. during PMS times. I am really afraid of weight gain though. I don't think I gained when I was on it before because my body losing the baby weight. Does anyone take AD's or not and can give me some advice or info? Thanks alot. I find it really hard to talk to others about this outside of my husband.

First, know that it isn't necessarily because your son is a young kindergartner. If you read any of my posts in August/September, you will see that I have an older kindergartner, who had a horrible time adjusting!! I will be glad to talk to you about all we did to get him through it. He is still very clingy, but it is SO MUCH BETTER. I spent three hours at the school today as the room mother, and although he did fuss when I left, he didn't cry! I was so relieved!!!
I have six kids, so I have been through so many different things with each of them. They all have very different personalities!! Two of the six are adhd (including the kindergartner).
I also take something to help me cope..but it has only been recent that I started it. I take Lexapro. It has been a life saver. I also took Prozac when pregnant with my last child. Again, it was a life saver. I am not sure I would have made it without that! I know that Prozac can be prescribed as something called Sarafem, I believe, that is specifically for major pms. You take it only 7 days a month.....you might check into that.
Please pm me if you would like to talk...or just want me to listen!! You are a good mommy to go outside your comfort zone and come here to ask! Take care!

I'm sorry you and your family are hit with this. We want so much for our kids to be healthy and would take sickness and pain upon ourselves to have it away from them. I'm nursing right now, so can't take anything (the doctor is trying to convince me it's time to wean so I can take care of myself), but I tried ADs a few years ago. I am extremely resistant and sensitive to meds. The side effects were bad or the different meds didn't work. My understanding is that this is rare. In my case, I have a HUGE bloodline with depression and other things. The doctor I'm using now has informed me of a different level of meds that can work better when ready. Mood stabilizers, rather than anti depressants, and anti anxiety meds, as I do have a hard time staying calm. For me, just getting into an even keel is a feat. I'm giving this info to you just in case the ADs don't work - don't give up (I did, and the Dr. let me), try another line of defense.

I just wrote a huge response on the DH laptop. Hit the wrong thing and gone. With my broken finger it just sucks!

So, briefly. Life can be hard for everyone, SN children or not. Life is painful at times and we need help to get over the hump. We can learn new skills, learn how to deal with the issues that hurt us, but while getting the skills the meds can really help.

Go to your Dr. and find the right med for you. Give them about 3 weeks to know if it works for you. If they don't ask for another. Keep in touch with your Dr. or therapist regarding your meds and how you do on them.

Like desertmom, my system assimilates very fast and I lost over 15 lbs on my meds. On a small 108 body, it was too much stress for me and I quit.

Good luck and welcome. The SN forum is wonderful resource for anyone in need.
