Let's brainstorm and come up with some summer activities for our Special Needs kids! My son has Sensory Issues, so we don't want to overwhelm him or any of our kids.

Swimming is great! BUT, we live in Arizona and are very fair, so we burn literally within 15 minutes. And, over 100 is just too darn hot to do much outside! Indoor play areas around here are either expensive, dirty, or get old quick.

What ideas do YOU have?

Hi Carol,

Great thread! We are going to put up a tent in the back yard and have little picnics without travel. We have horses so we will be working with the horses and getting Hunter ready for lead line in the fair. My niece will be barrel racing.

We have a creek on our ranch we float that when it just gets too hot for anything else. We don't burn easy. We also will go boating if the boat ever gets fixed and runs right!

Oh yes, then we get to move 21 lines of irrigation pipe every two days. I guess that isn't what you are looking for?

We are just busy but going to have fun on the ranch.

Everything I initally thought of involved water. LOL Riley loves the sprinkler. Maybe you could run it in the early morning or the late afternoon. She loves it even more if I let her run through it in real clothes, not just her swimsuit.

We have become quite big on gardening here. We put on our sunblock, our big floppy hats and head out with our watering cans. We weed, water and talk about all of the different plants, etc.... I also bought some flowers on sale at Lowes and we planted them in some pots (very pretty, very cheap) from Walmart. DD loves checking on their progress every day.

DD had also become fascinated with kicking balls. We bought her several different colored, different sized balls from Walmart (.99 - $3.00) and we just throw them all out into the yard and let her go crazy. Its good exercise for all of us.

Walking. Again with sunblock, shades and hats. We live in a neighborhood with lots of sidewalks and lots of mini lakes. DD is just thrilled when we go walking and she can see ducks and geese. Again, also a great form of exercise.

I will try and think up other things we do and get back to you.
