I didn't need to kill the principal, infact he wasn't even in attendance today. Well, in a nutshell, we reviewed all her test results and she tested for example: The average range for broad math is between 95-100, DD would score a 96, so she was average but in the low average range,,,,nothing that signaled significant Learning Disabilities, but yet not well enough to be an honor student, kwim? So they are reading all this techinical mumbo-jumbo to me and it's totally over my head and all the while im thinking" okay just tell me, is she going to be held back?", well dh asked the question for me and i was bracing myself for the answer. Her teacher (now back from maternity leave) said that holding her back will probably hurt her more than help her and she is going to recommend that she pass to 6th grade and has already highly recommended a 6th grade teacher for her and is also going to request that 2 of her best friends (Ashley and Brandon) be in the same class because they both really encourage her and that's within DD's comfort zone. OMG.....i almost cried tears of happiness, everyone in attendance (school pyschologist, Special education director, L.D. teacher and speech therapist) all agreed that holding her back will only cause more anxiety for DD and will not help her situation.
They are trying to word her paperwork as some kind of mental disability, probably because she is already medically treated for anxiety......so in other words, the anxiety might hinder her learning abilities and they can possibly get her a tutor thru the school.......woo hoooo!!!
They are coming up with strategies to help DD, incentives, goals, and rewards and one on one time. She will probably always need this through out her school years. They said her issues are so hard to pinpoint that they never had to adjust their teaching ways to fit a child like her.
Anyway, we are NOT telling her that she's going to pass, we want her to sweat it out a little, otherwise she will just give up trying right now if she knows that passing her grade is already "in the bag".
