I think I mentioned that my sister and BIL were suing their county's school system for lack of services and support over the last 2 years since my nephew was diagnosed with a mild form of autism. It has been a comedy of errors with them and my sister and BIL have documented everything along the way. In the meantime they spent over $50,000 of their own money to get him the therapy he needs which is making a HUGE difference. They had their mediation today and it couldn't have gone much better. They will be reimbursed $40,000 of that money and the rest they can collect from their insurance, plus he will get the ABA therapist for the summer and for next year (his kindergarten year) and will be in a normal classroom. They will have total involvement in his evaluations and his IEP meetings, etc. and will be able to help with the decision of how long the therapist should shadow him in the classroom and whether the current therapy is working the best that it should.
I am sharing this for all of you that have recently had your children diagnosed. There is a LOT of help to be had that you should not have to pay for. Find out what you can get and go after it!!! We will be resting easy tonight.
