To get everyone up to date on Tommy. Heart Cath scheduled for June 25. Now to the bigger news! Tommy was born with a swallowing defect called cricopharyngeal dysfunction. It is a paralysis or weakness of the pharyngeal muscle at the top of the esophagus that begins the swallow. We were told at birth that this is so rare that they just didn't know if he would ever swallow. (They didn't know how to treat it)
I can tell you as of today, June 7, 2007, I sat and watched him eat and swallow sweet potatoes in the speech therapist's office. His swallow study two weeks ago showed good motility and no aspirations (that we could see). This is the equivalent of someone in a wheelchair getting up one day and being able to walk! Everyone involved is shocked and amazed. We still don't know what the future holds, and if he will ever be able to get nutrition by mouth, but this is definetly a step in the right direction!
