Well, I feel like I was hit by a truck. Tommy had the cath to check the pressures in his heart and lungs. Healthy lungs are very important to his repair because the surgeon will reroute part of his blood flow to his lungs to take some of the strain off of his heart. As it turns out, because Tommy was born preemie, we found out today that on top of ALL the other issues, he has lung disease. He was born with it, and until we did the cath, we had no way of knowing.
This puts us in a very bad spot. He is now concidered a bad candidate for surgery, and cannot at this time be repaired. He must go on oxygen long term. We are going to continue to monitor him for about 3 months. At that time, we will do another cath and see if the oxygen is healing his lungs. If yes, then we can repair, if no, then our only choice is to give him a bigger shunt to help with his blood flow in the heart and keep him on oxygen. This only buys him time and is by no means a fix for his defect. We will get 6-12 more months before we do another cath with the same options. The lungs stop growing new tissue around 5 years old, so we can just keep repeating until we have no time left.
There is no way to know if he will ever heal. This is our only option. Right now, he is still in the hospital because of the sheer amount of drugs in his system. He is still not fully awake. He is on a ventilator, but he is nearly weaned off of the pressure, and will just be on oxygen in a couple of hours. He can come home tomorrow after his oxygen is delivered to our house.
