School will be starting soon. I challenge you (like you don't have enough challenges, right?) to get started on the items you want to ensure are covered in your pre-starting meeting. You will have one, right? If they don't offer, be sure you ask. Not just on meet-the-teacher night. Set up a meeting to meet the teacher and any resource teachers involved in your child's life before school begins. You should already have had your IEP/504 meeting. Be sure you cover it with the new teacher. Hopefully, the old teacher already briefed them, but you can't always depend on it.

List the items you want covered that are not in the plan - for my son, he must have water with him, and be allowed to use the bathroom - it is getting better as he gets older, but he needs that option. Accommodations such as private testing should be covered. Communication paths and styles need to be covered.

What else do you feel needs to be added to YOUR list? This should give you a month or more to make your list, so you are giving it thought and have time to edit it.

Please share what is on your list as you make it.

1) DS is returning to school in a wheelchair. How will they accommodate? Can he get an aide? Especially in regard to bathroom use? PE? What changes will be made in his physical therapy to account for this? Do these changes need to be made in his IEP as well?

2) 3rd grade is a mandatory retention year for failing the FCAT. Need to find out if/how this applies to DS. (I'm pretty sure he can be retained - want to find out what are the alternate assessments.)

3) What will be expected of him as far as writing? Can he use the alpha-smart machine he used last year? He needs to be given about 5-6x times to normal length of time to complete a written assignment - can he give oral answers or type instead?

I'm sure I have more - that I will need to add later

We need to meet with my college advisor for taking classes.

We need to go to the disability resource center for help with said classes.

For Hunter, we are just waiting to see what the new school wants as far as testing.

Because we are not in the public school system yet we have less to worry about this year.
