Ok, long story short, our central air is broken and the two window units we are running in our mobile home are just not cooling it down. It is running around 97 in here during the day. I keep a fan on Tommy all the time and that helps, but this can't be good for him.

We have gone through all of the typical channels here to get assistance, but bottom line is there is just no funding anywhere. Our local "cool breeze" program actually did give us the second window unit, but is only 5000 BTUs (the little tiny one at Walmart for $89). A couple of friends are working on trying to find someone to fix it for free, but we arent sure if that will pan out.

It has been suggested to me that I should write out Tommy's "story", and contact the local media to do a news story on him. Sure I want the help, and we definetly need this fixed, but is this the way? Has anyone else reached out to the media to get something for your child? What were the results? For some reason, I get the feeling seeing us on TV for that reason is like seeing one of those Sally Struthers "feed the children" commercials.

I know his health is at risk here, and I just don't know any other way. Why do I feel like I will be using Tommy? Maybe I have a hard time accepting help, I just don't know....

Thoughts?

I think going to the media would be WONDERFUL! You have an opportunity to educate the community about your child's "condition" (I'm sorry if that is a wrong term, not sure what it should be called. Forgive me if I offended.) People WANT to help, if they know it is needed. You aren't looking for a handout. You're looking for a hand UP for your precious little boy. Please consider it.

When it is for the good of your children, you do whatever it is you have to do...including swallowing your pride. I know. I've been there, too.

The media is a great resource for getting help, you might attract the attention of a local funding source for families with special needs children. There are a couple local organizations here that help out with that sort of thing.

You are right it is not good for him to be in that heat, it will make it hard on his respiratory system.

I have made a couple inquiry's I am waiting to hear back from them. I will let you know what I find out.

I think go for it! It is for your children's well being...your only asking for A/C to keep your family from getting over heated. It is not like you are wanted a new Mecedes.
I think your neighbors/community would be more then willing to help you and your kids. It is totally worth a try. There are many people who are in a position to help, especially when it is somebody in there hometown. Me personally I would be more will to give to a family who is having a tough time rather then give to a lot of these charity because I know exactly where my money is going....not in someone's pocket. I don't mean that there is not a lot of good charities/organizations out there...but there is a few that are not.
Good Luck.

I think you should. You need to do whatever you can to benefit him.

I applaud you for even considering this. And yes, you do have a good reason in doing so. I hope you can find someone wonderful to help you.

Have you tried contacting the repair companies and, due to your issue, asking for a discounted rate and see if they can help arrange financing?

Also, can you contact a caseworker at the hospital to see if there are any programs she is aware of to help with this? I so feel for you! I'm also wondering if any of the repair companies know of any programs to help so you can get the central air back on.
