I have two children on Concerta. One has been on it for 9 years, the other for almost 3 years. Feel free to holler at me, too.

Matthew was on Adderall XR for a long time (two or three years), and when his doctor switched him to Concerta, he was like a brand new boy! He seemed to have grown a tolerance to the Adderall. Right now, he is driving me crazy because he is on nothing because we have no insurance, but eventually, I will get that straightened out, and I will put him back on Concerta.

My dd took concerta for a while. I did like it because she was very mellow on it. But it didn't seem to help her with school work as much so the doctor switched her to Adderall XR. But I think the meds are different for everyone. It's pretty much trial and error until you find the proper drug and the proper dosage. It did have the anorexic effect that all the ADD drugs have in the beginning, but usually kids get used to it and stop losing wt after a month or two. HTH

I have a ga-jillion questions too.

How long before you notice any type of difference in your child? How many mg are your children taking? We're starting out with 18 mg & so far, I am seeing no difference, hence my first question.

Susannah, it often takes about two wks to see any diff. I know when my dd started we were to call the doc every two wks and give a progress report of how it was working. It takes a while to get it right. You want the maximum benefit without causing horrible side effects. So they usually start them out low, then increase if you're not seeing a difference, and so forth. Also...just to let you know if you ARE seeing side effects (insomnia and anorexia are the big two) those WILL get better in time. It's frustrating in the beginning, but just hang in there.
