My daughter has SDI, a speech delay, an emotional developmental delay, an anxiety disorder, and an auditory processing problem. She had a 2 1/2 year speech delay at age 3 1/2. It is not until this past year (3rd grade) that she was working at grade level. (She has no intelligence deficit.)
The best place is to start with a developmental pediatrician and/or an occupational therapist who specializes in children (especially sensory integration issues). The treatment does not involve medication, but regular occupational therapy.
Please feel free to PM with any questions because I am dealing with the speech issue also. My daughter's speech delay and auditory processing problem are related to her SDI. Her vestibular system (system of movement and balance in the inner ear) are off. Rarely, the vestibular system being off causes a speech delay and auditory processing problem can be attributed to sensory integration issues (as they are in my daughter.) This could be the case with your son.
My daughter could not say her first name until she was 4 years 2 months. Incidentally, she didn't potty train until 4 years, 4 months with nothing physically wrong with her. Her emotional developmental delay is tied to her speech delay. She had a 2 1/2 year speech delay with a matching emotional developmental delay.
She just finished third grade reading at grade level and doing her other work at grade level. I had to go in her classroom about twice a week to go through her desk to make sure she was doing her work, catching her up, etc. She now has about a one-year speech delay and a one-year emotional developmental delay.
Keep plugging away. Get your diagnosis so that your mommy intuition is at peace with it. Mothers know their children better than anyone. It does get better as they age when you have keep going for the treatment(s) they need.
