We are currently getting my 21mth old son evaluated by early intervention for suspicion of sensory intergration disorder, or just sensory issues.

He has seen the developmental therapist so far, and they said he is at an 18mth old level developmentaly, and she reccomended we also did a speech eval since in her eyes, she thought his verbal skills were at a 15mth old level.

Its all very stressful The occupational therapist comes on wednesday. I feel like I have failed and some of its my fault, But I know I couldn't have changed alot of the things ds has trouble with.

any other moms out there dealing with similar issues?

Tommy has a lot of sensory issues due to so much time in the hospital. He didn't make eye contact until 4 months, smile until 5 months, and hyperventilated when I held him until he was 7 months! I highly recommend this book as well. It is fantastic!

I have partily read that book, thats what urged us to get him evaluated by EI.

I need to buy my own copy instead of using the librarys.

The Out of Sync Child gave me many lightbulb moments. I wish I'd known about it when my son was a toddler. It would have made things a bit easier for all of us. Great book.

My ds was just diagnoised with Sensory Intergration Disoder last month. I know exactly what you are going through. It is just how they are born. There is nothing you did to cause this. I am here if you ever need to talk. It is so frustrating since not many people understand. I have always known something was not right with my ds but everyone kept telling me I either needed more discipline or I just had a quirky child. We are seeing an occupational therapist and a feeding therapist. I am glad we are moving in the right direction. Everything I have read says early intervention works well. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I just want to commend you for getting help so early for your child. It will make a world of difference in the years to come! I only wish i knew about such programs when my dd was smaller, but then again, i was in denial about some of her issues. So please don't feel like you have failed, you are doing a VERY,very good job of getting him the help he needs now and you may not realize it now, but when it comes time for him to start school, you will be so glad you did this for him. Keep up the good work!

My daughter has SDI, a speech delay, an emotional developmental delay, an anxiety disorder, and an auditory processing problem. She had a 2 1/2 year speech delay at age 3 1/2. It is not until this past year (3rd grade) that she was working at grade level. (She has no intelligence deficit.)

The best place is to start with a developmental pediatrician and/or an occupational therapist who specializes in children (especially sensory integration issues). The treatment does not involve medication, but regular occupational therapy.

Please feel free to PM with any questions because I am dealing with the speech issue also. My daughter's speech delay and auditory processing problem are related to her SDI. Her vestibular system (system of movement and balance in the inner ear) are off. Rarely, the vestibular system being off causes a speech delay and auditory processing problem can be attributed to sensory integration issues (as they are in my daughter.) This could be the case with your son.

My daughter could not say her first name until she was 4 years 2 months. Incidentally, she didn't potty train until 4 years, 4 months with nothing physically wrong with her. Her emotional developmental delay is tied to her speech delay. She had a 2 1/2 year speech delay with a matching emotional developmental delay.

She just finished third grade reading at grade level and doing her other work at grade level. I had to go in her classroom about twice a week to go through her desk to make sure she was doing her work, catching her up, etc. She now has about a one-year speech delay and a one-year emotional developmental delay.

Keep plugging away. Get your diagnosis so that your mommy intuition is at peace with it. Mothers know their children better than anyone. It does get better as they age when you have keep going for the treatment(s) they need.

thank you so much for your support!

I don't think it has anything to do with his ears, hes only ever had one ear infection in his life.
