ds (21mths old) had his evaluations completed today and we drew up an IEP.

they said he definatly has sensory intergration and perception problems. They also scored him at an 18mth level developmentally, and are concerened about his speech, which seems to be at the 13-15mth level, but me and dh told them we would rather hold off on the speech evals for now.

they are reccomending a sensory diet, more group exposure to other kids, more outings to parks and other public places to get him out of his safe haven of home, and a few other things I can't remember, they will write it all up and send us a copy.

we are a little iffy on the developmental therapist, she didnt give us a very accepting feeling when we met her, and the meeting today further turned us off, hopefully we wont be working with her personally when it comes to therapy, if we are, we will probably request someone else. She is very unaccepting of our extended breastfeeding, and also the co-sleeping and our gentle approach with ds. The way she talked today, you could tell she was trying to say we wern't putting our foot down enough, or that we were spoiling him, and being to overprotective.

We are willing to give the therapys a shot, but we will still call our own shots on how our instincts are reacting, if something just feels really wrong to us, we wont continue.

Eeew. She's kind of attacking core values. I'd move on. I wouldn't want anyone near my child, especially at that age who believes in a harder approach, especially since these children are so much more sensitive as it is and they internalize and mimic things. They shut down easily. I want to nurture the softer side of my child.

A second opinion never hurts.

yeah, if she ends up being out DT then we will request a new one, the OT who did the eval is different to who will be providing our therapy, so hopefully its the same with the DT, plus, shes reccomended group DT at the next town over, so they might be better.

if we dont feel comfortable, we will definatly change or discontinue.

I must agree that anyone who attacks how I raise my children can take a walk. I expect them to be professional, provide good services and help me to do what is best for my child. Their job is not to judge!

If I had listened to the speech therapist our DS would not be speaking and we would all be signing. Just because they are "professionals" doesn't make them right.

Please do what is best for your family but consider a new person.

she never outwardly/verbally attacked us about them, but you could tell she was implying it, and when she was here for the eval. she did give us judging looks over the nursing, and kept asking questions about it, and when we planed to wean and stuff. So I'm willing to give her a chance, incase its just lack of exposure to lifestyles like mine, but I won't let it go on to long

Go with your gut feelings. Don't stay with someone with whom you are not comfortable. You and your family do not need addition stress at this time.

I am glad you got the eval out of the way. Just remember that these people work for you. You do not have to keep these therapists. If you continue to feel uncomfortable, please don't hesitate to tell either her, or her supervisor that you would feel more comfortable with another therapist that shared your values or at least made you feel comfortable around them.

As far as I am concerned, breast feeding or co-sleeping did not cause sensory issues or developmental delays, therefore, stopping them would not instantly "cure" him either. As a matter of fact, weaning NOW would probably be a bad idea with all of the changes he is about to endure. He needs some sort of security and familiarity.

I would ask your OT about brush therapy. It really calms Tommy, and at 21 months, I would be he would be very receptive.

thank you everyone for your support and advice

the OT said he is hypersensitive in some areas, but also hypo-receptive, so I will definatly ask about brush therapy.
