How do you get one or find one? And what is the cost?

Thanks

As the parent of a special needs child, I would like to think I'M my son's best advocate!
However, the reality is that sometimes you just need someone to be on your side. For example, if you are talking about a school manifestation meeting (where your child might get kicked out or something), you might arrange for your child's behavior therapist or psychiatrist to intervene on your behalf. Just an idea.

I have always requested all testing results and "draft" IEP suggestions at least 5 days before my actual IEP meetings. (I do the request in writing with a date and always keep a copy.) This way, I have an "idea" of where the IEP may be headed. I hate 'surprises' in the IEP meetings.

If something is brought up in the IEP meeting where I feel I may need an advocate, I immediately ask why I wasn't provided this material before-hand as requested in writing. If something is brought up, I immediately ask for copies and to reschedule the meeting so I can find an advocate and review the information. Ask for copies and put the fact that information wasn't provided as requested in the parent comments.

The person leading our local Asperger's group has spent over $90K getting therapies and other things for her son. Mortgaged their house and all. She now is hiring out herself and a team to help. She wants $1500 for the school year. I'm sorry, but that is just too rich for my blood. I actually think it's unfair, but that's my opinion.

There is an advocate I'm aware of, but she's in San Diego, I think.

I think it's sad that we would even need one!
