My oldest daughter Amanda is ADHD and dyslexia, so she struggles in school. She is a sophomore in high school and is a pitcher for the fast-pitch softball team.
My second daughter Rebecca has chronic constipation and is kind of tone deaf
My third daughter Jessica is ok
My fourth daughter Makayla is being evaluated right now for her speech. They just did her developmental eval Wens and she passed doing between 4 and 5 years old. She is 27 months so I was surpised about that. We finish the eval this next week.

Thank you for sharing your family. You certainly sound like a busy mom, which I've noticed from your other postings! Please let us know how the dx turns out. (For those who wonder, dx means diagnosis. I hope we continue to explain our acronyms for others until I figure out how to do a sticky for acronyms.)

My youngest son was diagnosed with speech delay at age 2 1/2. He also has slightly decreased muscle tone. At 1 1/2 he had surgery to correct a droopy eyelid and two wandering eyes. We have had many issues with him and have run the gammot of specialists over the years. I am happy to say that so far, nothing has been major, but it has been stressful. Mostly because I have always felt that he was a normal kid with a few issues, but my dh and mil thought there was something more wrong with him, making me begin to doubt myself. After all the specialists and tests, I have come to realize that a mothers intuition is best
I also have an older son (12) who has had no issues other than he is very low in weight which only became a problem this year. He wants to go out for wrestling and unlike most kids who cut weight to do so, he needs to gain 5 pounds by November. Ugh.

Quote from Hawkshoe: After all the specialists and tests, I have come to realize that a mothers intuition is best
How true is that: Mother's intuition is best. It was the same for me. My parents live 2500 miles away, so they don't really see him, but my mom doesn't comment on it (I'm sure she knows nothing about Aspergers), and my dad thinks all kids like him need is to have the equipment to play on and get their energy out. Oh, yeah, and a good whuppin' too. Note that I now know that I have two brothers who are autistic, at least. Due to abuse, IMO, one turned into a schizophrenic. I am so glad we live in a different time. I won't try to mold my child to be what I want - I want to mold him to be the best he can be. Right now he is into movie making. I don't know if it's true, but I was reading that Steven Spielberg was diagnosed with Aspergers, as was Einstein (supposedly, but I'm sure that was after-the-fact).

I have two children who are diagnosed ADHD. One is a senior in high school, and she struggles academically because of it. She just cannot stay focused for the most part. However, on meds, she is doing very very well this year. ALL A's!!! I also have an almost 6 year old who is on meds. While Katie always had the attention deficit, he has the HYPER part, too. Before his meds in the morning, he is obnxious, loud, uncontrolable. Within 20 minutes of the meds, he is his sweet little self...still gets in trouble for things, so not a robot by any means, but he is in control of himself. I get SO tired of people putting down ADHD...so I am glad to know of others who's children have it..and can be a support group to each other on ways to deal with it and the life around it!

Hi!
I was wondering what sorts of therapies have you used for the dyslexia? My ds has been dx'd with "features of orthographic dyslexia". The therapist has suggested the Wilson reading method. She also suggested that this is something we will probably not be able to get through the school because ds will present as an average student because of his reading/writing difficulties even though his IQ is in the gifted range. Ds(7) has also been dx'd with ADHD--combined type.

USAFmom: Is there a resource teacher included in these meetings? They should be trained in dealing with this. If not, perhaps your insurance company can help find a therapist. But it is an educational issue, and I would definitely pursue at the district level if necessary. I was surprised what is out there that is not "advertised", and that they will work with children as young as 2 or 3!! You're a military family, right? Does the military offer any resources to families of special needs? It seems like they would, as it would help their "employees".

Thanks for your reply! I'm not surprised that it wasn't discovered sooner because from what I understand a lot of the kids are able to skate by without being discovered.
I hope I'm not being nosey but how was it discovered? I'm really interested because ds is only starting 2nd grade and the teachers so far haven't realized that ds has a learning disability, I'm the one that points it out and they still think his reading/writing errors are age appropriate.
In case you are interested www.schwablearning.org has a lot of good info. about a lot of learning disabilities.
